Does anybody have experience with the site?

I have a secured PGY-2 spot (Rads), but I am really enjoying medicine as a prelim. I am considering making a switch over to Medicine. I wanted to know if that is even possible, since I have not started my PGY-2 year at my new institution. I dont have any family reasons etc. for the switch. It is more a change of heart.

I would like to know people's experience with the site. How difficult is it to find someone who is willing to swap. I am assuming very few people are on the site due to the price, so it would be difficult to find someone. Is it worth the price in my situation?

You're thinking about this all wrong. You don't need resident swap at all.

I'm assuming you've matched to a Rads spot for July 2013, and you're currently in a prelim IM position. In that case, you would:

1. Contact your Rads program, and tell them that you are no longer interested in Radiology
2. Contact the NRMP, and ask for a waiver from your match. Getting one is automatic as long as you state that you are no longer interested in Rads, and ask before Jan 15th.
3. Once you have your NRMP waiver, you now look for PGY-2 IM positions to start July 2013. You can certainly ask your current program (if you're interested in staying there). Quite a few IM PGY-2 positions open up, usually in Dec - Feb, sometimes a bit later. It is a bit scary -- you have to let go of your Rads spot before having a new IM spot, but if you're in a good prelim and have the stats to get a Rads spot, you won't have much trouble getting an IM PGY-2 position. The biggest "problem" is that spots open on a random basis, so it's hard to "shop around".

Before you do any of this, I would contact the PD at your current program for their input.

aPD beat me to it.

If you like your current prelim program, walk into the PD's office tomorrow and say "I want to stay here next year, can you help me out?" It's not 100% guaranteed but it's your best shot. If you don't like your current program, you will have options...but it's going to be a little more work for you and a little more panic inducing.

I had to read your post twice to make sure I understood correctly... You enjoy intern year and want to switch out of rads for IM? Either you fell in love with somebody in your program or taking drugs!! 🙂

I'm joking... But still very rare to see this transition, best of luck to you!

I think it's related to the gloom and doom that's been happening over in the rads forum and the tight job market panic. My sister who's going into rads has the same issue and keeps wondering if she should go into something else.

So some people are giving up their rads spots for something else. I personally think it's a tad premature. There may be a resurgence of IM/FM salaries for the time being now, but I doubt they will continue at these rates. Just my hunch.

For the OP - if any of this is your motivation, then think long and hard before going to where the grass is greener!

If you really like medicine and are no longer interested in sitting in a dark room reading studies, then that's great that you realized it now.

FWIW, if you can get a swap it would take away the issue of finding a categorical position
Not really.

The NRMP match commitment with the Rads program is with the OP. You can't just tell that program: "Hey, I've decided not to come, but don't worry, I've found this other dude who is happy to take the spot!" The OP contracted (via the match) with the rads program, and they can't "give" that spot to someone else. What if the rads program has no interest in that person?

Finding a swap via any source is a match violation.

Hi May i know which state you are doing your residency? I am in IM categorical right now and i want to switch becouse of family reasons.I am trying very hard in residency swap with no luck since 2 months.

aPd, is it legal to communicate with other PD's regarding a possible transfer without first letting my program know? I've contacted a handful of programs in the city I'm trying to move to, but I haven't heard any response yet. Just wondering if they're even allowed to talk without first getting the OK from my program (I'm trying to avoid risking an uncomfortable remainder of my residency if I fail to secure a spot and they know I tried to leave...hence trying to send out feelers first).

Not aPD, but I did just register for the NRMP and read through their literature. Per them, it is a match violation for the program to talk to you about transferring before you have obtained a waiver.

I'm halfway through my residency already, I believe NRMP match obligations are fulfilled after you show up to your residency in good faith

Per their site:

" If a resident wants to transfer to another program, what is the responsibility of the current program and
resident to ensure compliance with NRMP policies?

If an applicant begins training in his/her matched program in good faith, there would be nothing the applicant
and program would need to do with the NRMP regarding a transfer. "

Yes, and no.

You have completed your prelim match commitment. You have not completed your rads match commitment, which is for July 2013 if I understand correctly.

So, yes, it theoretically is a match violation to do any looking for July 2013 without a waiver. You could transfer to a different prelim year (this year) without a match waiver (since that match commitment is already satisfied). Whether sending out "feelers" is acceptable depends on how you read the rules.

APD, I'm a different person person than the OP. having fulfilled my match obligations to the one program I matched at, is my contacting of other programs legal? Just wondering why nobody has responded one way or another.

Yes. If you've started your residency program and are at least 90-100 days in, you are done with your match commitment. You can contact anyone you want.
