I'm am PGY2 about three quarters of the way through my first year as a radiation oncology resident. As part of our quarterly review, our program director reviews the number of cases we've completed per ACGME rules (i.e. how many simulations we have performed).

Out of curiosity, what kind of numbers are residents posting per year, or by the time they graduate? I'm on track to be >50% through the required 450 simulations by the end of this first year.

On one hand, 450 for a graduating resident seems quite low. On the flip side, perhaps my program is busier than others?

Anyway, please post or PM me privately if you don't wish to divulge such information. For attendings, I'm curious to hear your experience as a trainee.

Thanks!

This is a typical volume and yes, 450 is a low requirement.

However, I highly recommend that you not count all your sims. All it will do is serve as justification to further expand programs.

I'll have just about all my cases by the end of 2nd year, and that's with 3 months of non radonc electives first and second year. Don't know if that means we're busy either but I think the 450 number is quite low.

Note: You have a limit of 250 sims per year according to the rules (see page 15).

Seems to me that 200 +/- 50 per year for 3 years is about right plus a year of research.

Anyway, I don't know what these numbers really mean. I could go scoop up every palliative bone or brain met treated with 2D fields at my institution and pad the heck out of my numbers, but would that make me a better radiation oncologist?

only requiring 20 SBRT sims is kind of a joke.

Maybe that would be a good way to limit program expansion is by increasing the required number of cases for the 4 year residency?? i.e. 600 cases required?
