that's crazy. I never heard about that when it originally came about but I find it kinda shocking.

These guys are now high rolling plastic surgeons. Hamptons and manhattan. Not bad.

I’m sure the view will be equally nice from prison.

But more seriously almost all residency contracts forbid working in direct competition with the program, I imagine lawsuits are coming.

It was twenty years ago though?

Wow totally breezed by the “1997”. Clearly didn’t read closely. Who knows what contracts were like back then, probably why such rules exist now.

Today one can get fired/not renewed for bringing bad press on an institution... the penalty for taking private paying patients away? Won’t be favorable.

Something’s fishy here. This is 1997, which is before work hour limits. I used to hear from my attendings that they worked 60 hours straight without sleep, 400 hours a week, and only took a break twice a month for bathroom and meals. Somehow these guys have time to have a thriving side business?

Even though one was officially fired. Guess he hired a good lawyer.
I see now that the lawyer argued that the resident did nothing wrong since he was working on an unrestricted license. The hospital got fined a whopping 66k and the residency was pulled.
But still. Hmm
