Hi there,

I was just wondering how do Resident swaps work? My reason for even thinking about a "swap" is because my wife is in a program about 6 hours from the program I matched into. My program is actually a very well regarded program and I would be super super excited to be a part of the program but the more I think about it the more I worry/dread being away from my wife and family. If we had to we would tuff it out but just looking to get some more info about this?

I found a few potential programs that are actually pretty close my wife's program on the "Resident-Swap" website. I imagine it would be easier to do a swap as a pgy2 or pgy3? Is it doable as a pgy1? How would you proceed in doing this?

Thank you guys.

I dont want to offend my matched program in anyway at all, I would still be very honored to be a part of their program... but I was just hoping to get more information about peoples experiences.

As an FYI, I'm almost certain that you cannot swap as a Family Medicine PGY3. ACGME requires that your final two years be at the same program.

I understand your trepidation. But please don't take swapping programs lightly. You genuinely could be giving up a great opportunity at your curgent program, and you alays have to ask why those programs have openings.

As they say about residency...the days are long but the years are short.

you need to finish out your PGY1 year, although people do start the process of starting PGY2 elsewhere during that first year

read the threads on SDN about switching residencies, terminations, resignations, before you get too excited
you want to know how to figure out if this is worth the trouble, what trouble it is, and what can go wrong before embarking on this

do you guys have kids? if you don't and you're both in residency, and it's a 3 year deal for one or both of you, I would just stay put the years go by fast when you live in the hospital

Relationships will suffer from the lack of daily physical contact and just simply being together, on the other hand for the level of busy you can be as a resident LDRs are good because with your all consuming residency schedule it's easier to pack your relationship into a neat box of anything from a text to a facetime wank to just a 10 minute convo of how was your day. That's the glass half full view on it. When your relationship becomes fewer interactions there can be a tendency to maximize the positive and have fewer but higher quality interactions. As hard as it is to come home to an empty bed, sometimes it's actually less of a strain on a relationship where both people need to give 100% to their career.

For once I'll spare yall the glass half empty view of LDRs.
