I'm currently rotating through the PICU and seeing orders written all the time for IV rehydration therapy (NS, 1/2 NS, etc). Are there any good resources for knowing when to use one type of rehydration fluid vs. another? I tried looking on UpToDate and DynaMed but had no luck.

In my opinion, this is the best book so far to learn the different kinds of IV fluids available and when to use them/not use them:

It's usually institution dependent.

This is usually the case.

Choosing NS vs LR

It will give you a base, so when you look at stuff you'll have a slightly better idea of what things mean, and will give you the foundation to have a meaningful discussion.
