Do y’all recommend any resources (websites, podcasts, blogs, YouTube videos, PDFs) where I can learn more about how to bill?

It could even be conferences (ie ASIPP, AAPM).

Ideally I’d like to learn the following:

  1. What exactly do I have to include in a clinic note or post op note in order to capture all legal billing?
  2. How can I pass audits and minimize risks in billing according to guidelines?

I’m sure it changes frequently but I don’t need 100% up to date information.

Why do I want this?

  • So when I start a pain fellowship I’ll build good habits when I write the post-op note, clinic note, etc and also not do anything inadvertently wrong/illegal.
  • I can create macros/templates so I can spend less time typing and more time seeing patients and learning.

Thank you for your time and thoughts.

PS - I know I’ll be a fellow in order to ‘learn pain medicine’ and ‘shouldn’t worry about billing’. And it takes ‘much more than a year to become good at just learning the fundamentals of pain’. Please don’t knock someone looking to learn another aspect of this field. And yes, I’m one of those people who have the bandwidth to manage multiple tasks. Not saying I’m better - just saying I’m wired that way.

PPS - No I’m not one of those sleazy pill pushers or needle monkeys. I just want to understand the basic financials behind this just like any other business endeavor. I plan on working hard and doing things ethically. And I want to make sure I’m not overlooking anything.

Just looking for recs 🙂

I would like to know some good resources too! I look forward to some other posts. I think it is very wise for you to think about this now. Most people learn billing stuff by just copying how others bill. I’ve seen lots of incorrect billing out there!

Right when you start the fellowship, ask your program director to allow you to have quarterly meetings with your primary Biller and Coder to go over charts and review what could be coded better.
