Esteemed colleagues,

PGY1 Ortho intern checking in.

As it seems many interested students check in here, I thought I would post the following for their benefit. Of course if those my senior have input on these resources I'm sure myself and the students would appreciate the input. These resources are geared toward MSIII/IV and PGY1.

General medicine pocket book for 3rd/4th year clerkship:
http://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Medici...tal-Handbook/dp/1608319059/ref=reader_auth_dp

Rapid interpretation of EKGs:
http://www.amazon.com/Rapid-Interpr...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297203752&sr=1-1

Pharmacopia, deluxe edition (with interactions, etc rather than just dosing):
http://www.amazon.com/Tarascon-Pock...=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297203789&sr=1-2

Netter's concise ortho anatomy:
http://www.amazon.com/Netters-Conci...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297203845&sr=1-1

Tolerances:
http://www.amazon.com/Tolerances-Or...=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297203845&sr=1-7

Pocket Orthopaedica:
http://www.amazon.com/Tarascon-Pock...r_1_11?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297203845&sr=1-11

Ortho Intern survival guide:
http://www.amazon.com/Orthopaedic-I...r_1_17?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297203927&sr=1-17

Gen Surg Intern survival guide:
http://www.amazon.com/Surgical-Inte...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1297204727&sr=1-1

Web links:
Student doctor.net:
http://www.studentdoctor.net/

Orthogate:
http://www.orthogate.org/

VuMedi: This is a great site if you're a visual learner for surgical approaches, etc. It requires an access request which may or may not be granted for you as a student. It won't hurt to try.
http://www.vumedi.com/

OR-Live: A non-restricted video website with lots of vids but with less emphasis on the approach and anatomy. Geared more toward attendings, I think.
http://www.orlive.com/

Handbook of fractures:
http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Frac...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1295369128&sr=1-1

Wheeless, online ortho reference:
http://www.wheelessonline.com/

Full disclosure: my brother works for amazon.com. None of these links benefit him or me directly (they were found via general search by title).

I found these resources valuable as an MSIII/MSIV and as a PGY1 in Ortho.

I hope these resources are of value to you as well. Feedback is appreciated.

Best,
jb

Solid book list, thanks.

Any recommendations on general anatomy review?

Between Netters for Ortho and Hoppenfelds Surgical Approaches that should cover all the anatomy you need as a 3rd and 4th year.

Nice thanks. What do you recommend for physical exam? Thanks again.

Netter's for ortho has a section for physical exam techniques in each section. With that said, I felt like I learned the majority of my technique from the residents and attendings on my rotation. If you absolutely need to by a book I did browse through Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis: http://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Guide-Musculoskeletal-Diagnosis-Medicine/dp/1588296741. But I honestly think it would be overkill.

I have Musculoskeletal Medicine by Joseph Bernstein that I used for my MSK class first year. I have the opportunity to trade it back in through Amazon for a gift card or I can keep it. How helpful would this book be for 3rd/4th year ortho rotations? I realize I wouldn't use it as a primary source but how about as an adjunct? I'm moving so I'm trying to get rid of books and things I don't want to take with me so if I should sell it then I will.

Here's a link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/Musculoskeletal-Medicine-Joseph-Bernstein/dp/0892032944

Thanks

http://www.amazon.com/Physical-Examination-Extremities-Stanley-Hoppenfeld/dp/0838578535

Hoppenfeld's Physical Examination of the Spine and Extremities.

This is not the same as his book on surgical exposures. I got this as a MS4 and it's fairly comprehensive if not overkill. It's available through Amazon (I have no financial relationship) and in my opinion it's the best book out there for ortho exams. I'm a PGY3 and I still look at it from time to time.
