After being waitlisted at my top choice, I contacted my interviewer who suggested that I should also inform the dean of my interest in attending the institution. I wrote a brief email to the dean, in it explicitly stating that their school is my top choice and that I will follow up with a letter of intent accordingly. The dean responds saying that there is no need to submit a formal letter and that my note will be relayed to the admissions committee.

I'm feeling somewhat anxious because I was hoping to elaborate specific reasons of why I would fit in with the school. But now the committee only has a "statement" of intent without follow-up justification.

Does this put me at a relative disadvantage in comparison to the waitlisted applicants that do draft a formal letter? Should I try to weave some of the content into my subsequent update letters? I'm probably overthinking it, but I'm at a loss of how to interpret my situation. Would appreciate any advice if anyone has been through similar situations. Thanks!

The Dean has politely told you what most adcoms indicate is the case: an LOI is meaningless in most applications. Ignoring him/her will likely have a detrimental effect on your application.

Thanks! Guess I will just sit tight!
