Ok ill make this brief because i tried to make a list last time and it wasnt good. blew my gpa to pieces to a 2.0 after sophomore year. Now three years later with a sci gpa of a 3.1(it was a 1.8) and an overall of a 3.2 Im going to take a swing at applying in june. my mcat practice scores have finally hit the 30's so im looking for a list of schools to apply to. please critique. be gentle.

NJ resident
GPA=sGPA=3.1 cGPA=3.2
MCAT= will be sitting in june hoping for a 35.
EC's chem tutor, substitute teacher shadowed nuerosurgeon(watched removals of subdural hemotomas etc.) and pediatric cardiologist. volunteer firefighter. 200 hrs volunteering in the ER.

i went with schools who took a lower gpa and ones i would possibly be happy at even though i know i cant be picky. also went with oos friendly schools.

I don't know anything about the relative selectivity of DO med schools, but to have a good shot at getting into an allo school, have you considered waiting another year to get your GPA up higher? Another year would also give you time to get in a research experience and maybe some leadership so there won't be any weak parts on your application..

from what ive heard if i have an mcat in the 30's and a 3.2 overall i should gain acceptance somewhere at an osteopathic institution. I have thought about waiting another year but thats another year and im already looking at taking this one off in applying in june. would it be suicide for me to apply to MD schools with a 3.2 even with a heavy upward trend? I have legitametely thought about waiting another year and gaining research experience but this has taken me almost three years to fix and waiting another year would suck, but i would do it if i wouldnt even gain any interviews. my list has schools with a lower cGPA and they have taken certain applicants with a 3.1-3.3, i checked the MSAR, but im sure those applicants were probobly incredible. thank you for posting btw any help is greatly appreaciated.

I feel like with your stats, you got too much DO schools and not enough MD schools (unless you would like to go to a DO school over MD acceptances)

I would say three to five DO schools, carefully picked to represent old and new schools (like PCOM, AZCOM and Touro)

And as for MD schools, you gonna need at least 20 of them.

Consider adding Rosalind Franklin, the SUNYs, Penn state and Temple.

A steep upward trend is a moderating factor that may gain you consideration at MD schools. A wow-factor MCAT score is another. And personally, I think being with a fire department is interesting and different too. I don't think it would be "suicide" for you to apply to MD schools, but you won't be a shoo-in either, even with a very-good MCAT score. I do think you have a good shot at DO schools. Your persistence in following your dream for the last three years will show on your application, and I think that will count for something.

I wanna thank all of you for your posts. Thank you I am DEF gonna apply thank you again lol

you think my stats are good enough to cut DO schools and add more MD schools? as far as adding other schools i will add temple but i was looking through the MSAR and I wanna make sure that the MD schools are out of state friendly. i will def. check out the schools youve mentioned
