Hi Everyone,

I was wondering for those who use Keiler retinoscopes, Do you usually use sleeve up or down?

I usually ret with sleeve down for a with movement = plus and against = minus

For some reason, with me, the axis is easier to find in the sleeve up position. Sometimes I continue to scope in sleeve up, with with add minus and against add plus. This is especially true if I was having problems in sleeve down position. I don't really think it matters. I was taught that if you are having problems scoping, change something, the sleeve, add plus/minus, take out the cyl, move in for a dim reflex, etc. Whatever you do, don't keep scoping a tough meridian the same way, as you will just get same results.

The reason that the axis is easier to find with the sleeve in the up position is that you're actually focusing the retinoscope now on the image of the meridian in front of you instead of having the retinoscope focused at infinity (default). I'd use this to fine/tune the axis, but I'd rather drop the sleeve back down and stick to neutralizing with motion using + lenses. I don't want to flip the rules upside down like that b/c I'll forget what I'm doing half-way through. If it works for you though, that's great! I can just see myself finishing the right eye with the scope up, then starting the left eye with the scope down still trying to neutralize with motion with minus lenses......

Spot or streak ret?

I only do streak retinoscopy..
