Here's how I read your post using your formula:

working in heat/AC + six figure annual salary + have to drive car/fly to see mom & dad = 1st world problems.

Oh wow, I'm not even sure why I continue to visit this forum. Here's another formula for you

Six figure annual salary - (Student loans + Mortgage + Car Payment + City Bills + Children + Taxes) = Barely making anything

The starving kids in Africa who have their entire families die from Ebola don't have it as bad as you.

Seriously, if you hate your job quit and do something else. No one is holding a gun to your head. You are causing your own depression.

But, yea, I'm sorry for it being bad. You can always do something about it, so keep your head up. Retail is not the only place a pharmacist can work.

.

I'm not depressed. Just trying to put things in perspective for these pre-pharmacy students just doing it for the money.

Many of us also went to pharmacy school because we love retail pharmacy. For those of us out there, life is pretty good, especially with some holiday pay, vacation and bonus..

I went into RX school at a lot older age than my peers, so that may have something to do with my outlook ... But I completely see myself doing this until I fall over and die , I enjoy it so much!

And anyone who works in the real world knows that 90% of the "old" people who are being laid off are because they are stubborn and not ready to take their game to the next level.. just like in any field. The only reason it isn't happening more is because starting salaries keep going up so fast!

well it was one of these saturated professions or grad school. Grad school has scarier stories, so I'll stick to pharmacy

What's the next level? Working alone without tech help to fill 500 rxs per day?! lol

Idiot student + 200k loans = Retail slave

or

Six figure annual salary - (Student loans + Mortgage + Car Payment + City Bills + Children + Taxes) = Barely making anything

Sorry to have to put it this way but you pretty much just confirmed the validity of rockinacostics post and argument against you rofl

Yeah that's one part . I think in a couple decades we'll see a 500/day store with 2 Rph and 1 tech and the rest automated... But I also think your average 300/day store will be 600/day by then

Dude, I get people have it way worse than us. All I'm saying is that the investment to become a pharmacist nowadays isn't what it's cracked up to be.

And you'll continue to work your ass off with same pay and more demands? I highly doubt retail chains will be able to "afford" automation and the costs to maintain it.

What is it cracked up to be ? Who is cracking it up this way ?

Yes there are few people who fanatically enjoy work or retail as much as me ... But there are a hell of a lot of people who enjoy the job.

And also the whole loans argument has trouble holding water in the face of IBR too. Paying 10% per month out of a $7000-9000 paycheck is a situation that literally , 99.9% of people in the world are envious of.

Even subtracting that 10% , you are making more money than at LEAST 93-95% of United states workers .. for doing a job that can reasonably be called fun and stimulating ? Give me a freaking break !

I don't have half of those. The problem here seems to be poor personal decisions, not professional.

I didn't have half of those either when I was a pharmacy student. But life goes on... unless you plan to be single forever...

Moderators, please delete this thread.

We all make 100k+, so apparently I have no reason to complain as to what's going on with this profession and where it is headed.

Thank you

Are you actively doing anything to better the profession? I'm curious cause I see a lot of people complaining but do nothing to help it...

First of all, I have stopped precepting students from new pharmacy school around me. There's no way in hell I will support these for profit schools. They can complete their community clerkship elsewhere.

Secondly, I over schedule on technician hours and don't give a rat's behind what corporate thinks. I will schedule to my needs, not just based on foot traffic at the pharmacy. They can fire me... I just don't care anymore.

Other than that, I'm not sure how I can stop this profession from turning into a complete train wreck. I don't have the power to shut down these new schools..

Unfortunately, community rotations aren't the limiting factor at any pharmacy school, they're extremely plentiful...it's the removal of hospital/acute care spots that will cause a world of hurt, especially when there's only a few spots in town to support.

Well, all these directors of pharmacy at non-retail sites need to get with the program and remove all internship/externship programs.

Why would they? They love the free labor as much as the retail giants.

Asked my new grad staff pharmacist what his loan was a couple years ago. Told him don't buy a car live in one of my rentals for a slight discount and live frugally for four years. Four years have almost past and he's about to be loan free. He's only 27.
