Why would anyone choose retail tech as a career? You make pretty much the same working at starbucks with half the stress. Making a mistake in a pharmacy is a big deal. But if you mess up a drink at starbucks you can just remake it.

Techs don't make mistakes, pharmacists do.

While the pharmacist is ultimately responsible, the tech also gets dinged. But at starbucks, as long as you apologize and remake the drink, no one will remember it.

My techs make around $18 when capped out which doesn't take very long. Their health benefits for a family are $10 a week.... which in other places can cost up to $1000/month in premiums. I'd say it is a pretty good deal.

Not sure how much Starbucks workers make, but I always thought it was around minimum wage.

Full time techs at corporate can also have benefits.
Not sure if the kid with the nose ring at starbucks has health insurance from whipping up your

I know a CVS tech that makes $24 / hr.
He's been working there for ages, but just regular tech duties.

There's another guy that functions as a staff trainer in the Austin district who I'm pretty sure makes around that much as well. Used to be a programmer or something too. He deserves more, IMO. Really great guy.

It is very difficult to find and train quality techs in chain retail because of the low quality of work life and low wages. Even if you get a good one they will quit for greener pastures eventually. It's the lifers you will have a problem with because they suck and they know it so they will cling to their job by any means possible and make yours harder.

I'm not 100% sure but I think Starbucks actually provides good benefits to their employees for a retail gig.

I used to work at Starbucks in high school- made 11$/hr and great benefits. I actually took a pay cut to go work as tech in rite aid ( i was starting 0-6 pharm school)

I actually like Starbucks a lot more until a got an intern job in hospital

A lot of the account managers in the PBM industry has a history of being Pharm Techs. Or people in the insurance industry, such as appeals. Since you need people with a medical background.

So I guess retail tech as a career can serve as a springboard to other paths.

It's not a career, it's a job/occupation that pays the bills that is in a temp controlled room, sanitary, and relatively safe

That's true but for some, the idea that your job involves helping people instead of serving them coffee is a more attractive option. Even if that means that you'll be dealing with more verbal abuse.

Like it is often said, the defining difference between working in a prison and working in chain retail pharmacy is dealing with the scum of the earth as opposed to working with prisoners. The extent of psychological violence inflicted in retail workers in general is underrated.

Literally the other day I had a patient admit he would have jumped the counter and beat the **** out of one of my techs if there was no threat of prison time. For what, being a douche **** who cut in line (I happened not to be there that day; otherwise I would have immediately kicked his fat ass out.) This garbage is not welcome.
