Hi, guys.
I am an anesthesiologist. I was asked to do a labor epidural for a patient with the history of a broken epidural catheter which was not retrieved. It happen many years ago, presumably asymptomatic patient. She is in her third trimester. My colleagues are saying "Just do it and if something happens it's your fault. What would be a reasonable approach? Would it be better to stay away from her back until after delivery and then try to locate her catheter? she ids now 36 weeks.
Thank you.

Catheter may have migrated and if not it's likely scarred in. Probably could see on an x-ray if you have any available If it was a lumbar drain I wouldn't personally consider it an absolute contraindication for another one but that being said we don't do epidurals and it may be more of a barrier.
