Retake Bio 101 4th time?

Hey all, so I'm been pretty stiffed with my bio 101 class the past couple of years, this one has been a pretty big headache. I took it about a year ago and got a D-, retook it again and got a D+, then retook it again and got a B. Problem is, I've been hearing that to to have a competitive retake, you gotta shoot for that A. Retake? Also, took a lot of upper level biology classes and ended up getting B's and such-

I'd say it it depends on the situation. I bombed a lot of intro science classes when I started college. I barely graduated high school and didn't know how to study/learn properly. But I didn't let that stop me from doing what I wanted. Didn't stop me from getting accepted to schools either...

Depends completely on the professor, class curriculum and biology department in the undergraduate. Biology 100 and 102 in my undergraduate was the "weed out" classes for any pre-health profession. The exam questions always had a multiple choice option of none of the above, and other choices were typically 3-5 sentences long. Every exam had a written section and you had to write 2 essays from 3 different prompts.

As you progressed further in the upper biology courses, the professors and curriculum were significantly easier. For example, the Biochemistry course offered in the BIOLOGY department had all of their exams in multiple choice format. Unlike the multiple choice format in Biology 100 and 102, the multiple choice options were always straight forward and had 1-5 word answers.

Don't assume any class is a "walk in the park" for any pre-dent. Everyone comes from different schools and socioeconomic backgrounds.
There is a reason why the DAT exists, it is the standardized test that makes the playing field as fair as possible.

Lol not necessary, I struggled in gen bio 1 and 2 at CC too first time took it got W and retook it got C which i kept. Moving on to 4 years university, I aced almost all my upper division sciences you can think up like ochem, pchem, immuno, biochem...etc..

Bio 101 at my school was a weed out course. Looks like you had a pretty easy curriculum.

I failed gen chem 1 and I'm in my third year of dental school. Who knows how bio is at his school. Becareful giving such negative advice like that.

I appreciate your profound insight, it seems like you have quite a knack for determining the future of a person based on one fact. While we're on that page, I like strawberry jelly on my peanut butter sandwich, could you tell me what my DAT score will be? Anyway, I have received a B in anatomy, A in physiology, A in both my physics, C+ in Micro, B+ in Molecular, A+ in Genetics, A in Biochemistry, and an A- in Chemistry concerning bulk/dark matter, an elective that satisfied my curiosity for the convoluted. However, it seems that my talents of sorts does not translate into basic topics, as I happened to greatly struggle in chem 101 as well. Appreciate the positivity folks, good to see some good people at the end of the tunnel

As others have said, I would definitely just stick with the B. I received a C in Bio 1107 but I got an A in Bio 1108. So it really does depend on the professor and the way the class is structured.

Haha that came out of no where. I hate to break it to you but it's the general subjects that will be on the DAT. General bio, chemistry and organic chemistry. Now you have few Bs and a C so your science GPA might be alright at best. You repeating a course isn't the end of the world, but repeating few times... question marks. You have a decent shot of making dental school, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But you have to put more effort, especially on the DAT. Best of luck.

SOMe people get offended so easily haha. I'd stick with the B at this point. I'd continue to do well on science courses u have left. I agree that intro courses can be tough. If I get to do gen Chem or cell bio all over I don't think I could doc it again just cause I got used to the more advanced courses that don't require an enormous amount of effort

If you like the convoluted in science, why not teach? Just a thought. Great pay, less stress, and definitely more suited to people who enjoy the complexities of science over the proven.

You'll be fine as long as you take upper level science classes and excel in them with B+ or higher. Schools such as NYU have a 2.75 GPA cutoff, so you can supplement that with an awesome DAT score

I took a biochem course 3 times; based on the comments during my interviews, i would not recommend retaking it a fourth.

i think if you are willing to pursue dental career you should stick to it. Retaking a class for 3 times is not a big deal. Just learn from your mistakes and get all As in the future. I failed Bio (intro course) 2 times and third time i got a B+. Right now, i have no trouble taking upper division classes. I got all As and it was just the way I studied. Don't let anyone to discourage you. It is honestly the way you study, not how smart you are. Crush that DAT, and take more upper div science course and i think youll be fine. I know a guy that graduated with 2.73 and took post bacc and raised his GPA to 3.0 and still got into UOP. so theres hope. upward trend is key 🙂

I know people who failed Bio 101 first year of college, did very well the other years of undergrad and then are doing excellent in dental school.
Mostly these students are lacking the help and/or study skills needed to succeed.

that brash nature is more harmful than your bad grade and will get you nowhere in healthcare especially in dentistry where your attitude is a large part of your success.

I would care way less about your improvement in Bio 101...I'd be more relieved to see you go on to ace a series of upper level bio/chem classes...no offense, but after 4th time, my german shepherd could probably pass bio 101....

that's too broad of a statement in a sense. Not doing well for the 3rd time isn't a good sign for sure, but that doesn't mean he cannot redeem himself and do better on upper level classes in the future.

I actually struggled with my bio 1 class as well because it was such a huge class and the material was very broad. I just didn't have the motivation to study at the time. Ended up with a low grade, retook it, but still ended up not getting an A. I believe I got a B. I managed to do well in subsequent upper level bio classes despite that, so it can be done.
