Definitely retake it. I know how much it will suck but in the long run it will pay off. Good Luck

Dental school is getting REALLY competitive and there is no sign of of that changing anytime soon; especially for next year. I'd say that next year might even be more Competitive. In any case, retaking the DAT is your best bet. It's really something that is in your control; it's much better than hoping that the adcom will overlook your scores and only consider you based on your GPA. Also, have you considered taking a Kaplan course? It did wonders for me. Best of luck! 🙂

As much as this may sound tough it's so easy to do once you have a goal which is getting into dental school. Thus, I would definitely take it again, I took it twice and I am in for Fall of 2006. There is not much you can do on your GPA for the next cycle but there are 2 things you can do that help you the best: 1) Apply EARLY (like in early June) 2) Retake DAT and take it before the end of July or Mx early Aug. Because most good schools start interviewing in September.
Good Luck 👍

Definitely retake it.........you would be taking a definite and unnecessary risk by leaving it as is.

DID YOU HAVE ANY INTERVIEWS OR ARE YOU ON ANY WAITING LISTS? IF you have not heard anything then I would retake them. I have had two interviews (UB and PENN) got waitlisted at both places and I have two more (BU and Tufts) the 27th+ 28th of Feb. with very similiar DAT scores.

thanks, guys!

i haven't had any interviews.. which is really bad...
i'll retake DAT and apply SUPER early!!!

Seriously? How did you get an interview with Penn with those scores?

will you guys please also mention your cum and sci gpas? that is a huge factor as well...think...3.1 and 18/18 or 3.8 and 18/18.

also, my stats are:
cum 3.19
sci 2.89
19/19/18 (range of 17-25)

do you guys think i should retake mine?

your stats are little better than mine..
my cum gpa is 3.05 🙁
my sci gpa is 2.95 🙁

You need some killer DAT's with a low GPA like that. Shoot for nothing lower than a 21AA and you should get in somewhere. Good Luck guys!

I think you should retake DAT because it is much harder to get accepted into dental school these days due to a large amount of premeds with excellent stat apply to dental school.

Hi Lovechild,

Even though your stats is not that bad; I'd say you should retake the DAT and score at least 21 across the board. A science GPA that's under a 3.0 will be frown upon so you should definitely balance it out w/ killer DAT scores. I know it's really hard to study everything over again but believe me, going through the admission process for a third time is NOOOOO fun. So, yes, go and sign yourself up at a nearby KAPLAN center, NOW!

i think I can be of some help here..

I applied this year, to a few schools, NYU, BU, TEMPLE, UMDNJ..

Cum. gpa = 3.01
Sci gpa = 2.96

DAT AA/TS/PAT: 22/23/16

I got rejected from Temple, and rejected from UMDNJ after my INTERVIEW. I think I had bad luck at UMDNJ plus my own stupidity (i sent the confirmation in late, so my interview was rescheduled a month later... very dumb of me, i admit)

But so far, NYU and BU have no comment on me.

I'll be reapplying with a SLIGHTLY higher gpa (hopefully break the 3.0 mark on my science)

You truly have impressive DAT scores. But could your rejections be somehow related to your PAT result?

I think the sub 3.0 sci GPA is the killer. I doubt the 16 PAT was a factor, especially with 22/23. I imagine most schools place less emphasis on the PAT.

Take a few extra classes to break that 3.0 mark and you should be fine. Seriously, with all the qualified applicants out there, they have to draw the line somewhere.

I have similar stats. 19/19/21 and 3.08/3.09 I plan on retaking the DAT in a couple months to try to get 25+/25+/25+. Yes, I know... aiming high. I would love to find a study buddy in my area with similar goals or opposite scores, higher academic (mostly GenChem) and lower PAT. I live in LA, so I assume it would not be hard to find one. Sorry, rambling... Question: Is there a place on this website to post that?
