retake mcat while applying for med-school

hi, everybody

I just took my MCAT and got a 21. I plan on applying for med-school this year and retake the MCAT in august. Is it wise to do that? will I still be considered after I retake my MCAT if there already look at my current MCAT score?

Hi adrienne. First, what kind of GPA do you have? is it above a 3.5 cumulative and higher with the sciences? If so, maybe...but I truly wouldn't waste your money. I think you will pretty much be screened out of a lot of secondaries.

I would retake it definitely, but not right away...you really need to make sure that you have the content down well, and you need to practice taking the test alot. One of the things I noticed from those MCATers that have taken the MCAT is that there scores are usually right around their averages, especially if they have taken alot of tests.

Use this next year to do that and strengthen your application (GPA, ECs, etc.). Even for DO schools, you want at least, at the very least a 25 on the MCAT (along with a very good GPA).

Medical school isn't going anywhere. It'll be there next year as well as the many years after.

my GPA is 3.8, 3.6 in science. have some volunteering and shadowing experience. I'll be graduaing with two degree: biology and french ( I thought that would help)

well, I called the school today and they said to go ahead and apply because I am resident of the state where I am applying and will get a second application and interview anyway, so it would be in my best interest as they said. Do you think that my GPA and a strong overall application would compensate for a low MCAT score? score is 21L, got a 10 in BS, 6 in PS and a 5 VR, I think I can definitly get a higher score next time since I only reviewed a couple week before I took the MCAT.

Since your state school told you to apply, do so. Your GPA is good, but you'll definitely have to retake the MCAT. While your state school may be where you want to end up, you still want to be competitive.

Are you saying you're going to apply to only one school? Can you be absolutely sure that you will do MUCH better on the upcoming MCAT (I'm talking about high 20s or low 30s)? What if you don't? Even if you automatically get a secondary and an interview, you might end up at the bottom of the school's waitlist because of your MCAT scores. Who knows? But, your GPAs look pretty good to me. So, if you want to get in this year, make sure to rock on the MCAT. Good luck!

ill be honest 21 is really low especially for MD. but if it were me, i would take the chance. It might cost you a little but it would give you experience in the process if nothing else. Don't be too upset if nothing happens, but get everything ready and give it your best. Also with a 3.6 science GPA, you must be pretty smart, definately smart enough to significantly bring up your MCAT. DO ome introspection. FInd out what went wrong. Make a plan of action on how you are going to change. Put in the effort and im sure youll see the rewards (especially acceptance letters) come

I am applying for both of my state school. I contacted the admission office and they said that they may wait to give me an interview until they get my new MCAT score. But yeah, I don't really have a high hope on this one, I'll just reapply next year if my new MCAT score is low.
I'll just consider this time a practice.

work on your PS and do some VR practice. if you can get close to your BS score on thr other two sections, you'll be fine.
