I took chem for engineers ( uncertain I was gonna do pre-med at the time) and ended up with a C. Chem for engineers in my university is a watered down type of chem AS compared to the normal Gen Chem. I tried taking Gen Chem 2 this semester however felt that I was way behind on the info and couldn't catch up. Is it better for me to self study and learn chem 1 this summer and just take chem 2 in the fall, or chem 1 in the fall. If I do retake Gen Chem 1 in the fall, whatever grade I get, even if its an A just gets E- credited (doesn't count towards graduation) which kinda seems pointless for me to do that much work for nothing. So do I go hard and self study this summer, or retake Chem 1? I am a freshman btw

You cannot go wrong either way.

Especially for DO programs, it will be beneficial to retake that gen chem (grade replacement). But aside from that, if you feel you can self-study well enough to excel in gen chem 2, go for it. This is a good choice if you have particular course schedules that you want to graduate on time and do not want schedule conflicts due to having gen chem (and its lab).

From your post, it sounds like your gen chem courses are quite difficult. If I were you, I would still retake gen chem 1. The credits will not count, but hopefully your knowledge base will pay off when you go into gen chem 2 being confident, rather than worrying about whether you self-studied well enough. During the sunmer, I would focus on research internships or etc. instead.

Thank you for the feedback. However, I should add that if I do take Gchem over again, I will not be able to take Ochem 1 until the spring of my junior year (my school only offers ochem in the spring and ochem2 in the summer/fall). If I self study and take chem 2 in the fall I will be able to take Ochem 1 my spring of my sophomore year.
