Hello.

I am first year canadian student planning to attend US Dent school. I have completed my first semester where I ended up taking almost all prereqs with full course load ( 5 courses per term). I was an immature student and fooled around during my first sem and got low grades. Now I look back and find that those grades really matter. So, Which courses should I retake? I know I can get atleast B+ to A in them if I retake them. If my university does not allow me to repeat classes and I perform well in advance courses, are my chances still pretty much destroyed? Considering if they calculate prereq GPA for screening process and seeing how there are not many prereqs that are required (around 8-9 courses).

Here are my Grades:
(All these courses are prereqs)

General Biology I B-
General Chemistry C
Intro stat C
Calculus I D

So which courses are important for me to retake? Thank you

Gen Bio and Gen Chem are really important because they appear on the DAT. Getting a B- in Gen Bio isn't too bad so it's up to you to retake but I'd definitely retake Gen Chem. Also, you must retake Calculus because a D isn't a passing grade. And I wouldn't worry too much about retaking Stats.

retake anything below a C(for the most part). Do not retake a class you got a C or above in, if you want to improve your situation, just take upper level bio classes.

No point in retaking.... just keep trucking away at new classes and stop getting C's lol

all the best

Retake calc 1 if its a prereq for school you wanna go. Don't even think of retaking bio 1 (just take more upper div bio's). For Chem and Stat, you could retake, but i would NOT. As DentalWorks said, take upper division chem and bios (i.e organic, biochem....) and get good marks in them.

Most schools don't even accept anything below a C. That being said, to increase your chances, I'd retake everything that is a C or worse. I had a B- in one of my bio courses, and was fine. I also had a C in Physics, but they were a little annoyed by it and it came up in many of my interviews.

I would only consider retaking chem and calculus, which I guess you would have to consider on a school to school basis. A B- in bio is fine. If you are set on retaking chem just to give yourself a little piece of mind so you aren't worrying about it for the next couple years, I would be sure you can get an A. From what I understand, even if you get a B+ and it is an improvement, schools expect you to be able to master the material the second time taking it and not getting an A would almost look worse than just not retaking it.
