Ive been out of university for about 2 years now. Im going back in the spring as post-bacc to retake/take more challenging courses. I'm retaking most of the pre-reqs (Organic Chem 1 & 2, Physics 1, and a higher level biology course).

-Should I retake the courses listed below? OR only retake the C's?

After being out of university for 2 years.. I am hesitant if I should also repeat Gen Chem 1 to refresh my memory.

Gen Chem 1: B+
Gen Chem 2: C

Physics 1: C
Physics 2: B-

Calculus 1: C
Calculus 2: C+

I'd retake the Cs and not the Bs. You don't strictly need to retake any of those, since none are a C- or lower, but the safe bet to show the new you is able to handle the sciences would be retaking all C and lower.

Do you think it's a good idea to retake classes since they average grades together ?
I was told if someone retakes classes after graduating the new gpa is going to appear in a separate line; post bacc section
I guess even though the retakes won't help much with the undergrad gpa it's going to help a lot with the 'new post bacc gpa'

The averaging still helps your cGPA (cumulative GPA). The cGPA is displayed broken down by year to admissions people, so they can easily see Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior/Postbacc to look for trends.

Retaking a prereq C is only partly about grade repair. You could take much easier other classes to get the same amount of repair done. It's more about showing that you can handle the rigorous college intro science classes.

Do you have Cs in any other courses? I'd be hesitant in retaking the calculus courses since they won't help you at all on the MCAT. However, if your overall GPA is in need of a boost, it wouldn't hurt (besides the money and time you'd be investing).

Yes, unfortunately I have a couple more C's. I'm also hesitant on retaking the calculus course (I struggled with calculus), but my GPA does need a boost. Should I take a higher biology course instead? (microbio, genetics, etc.) I'm trying to use this DIY Post-bacc to show that I've matured since I've graduated undergrad.

What is your total gpa?

My cGPA is 2.8 and sGPA is 2.9. Which is the reason I am doing a DIY Post-bacc. If boosting my GPA doesn't work.. I plan to do a SMP after a 1.5yr DIY Post-bacc. Hopefully to have a chance at a MD school..

I'd retake all C course work. Obviously grade replacement even for DOs is out of the question now but that doesn't mean that, upon digging in your transcript a bit, adcoms won't appreciate seeing you having gone back and proven you can master material you once had trouble with. Retake all Cs, but be aware that you really need to get an A the second time around to have a desired effect.

Seems like most SMPs have a GPA requirement of 3.0. You're close to that and can prob get there without too much work. But be advised with the new AACOM changes, a LOT of people who were doing GPA repair banking on DO grade replacement are now going to be forced to do SMPs or write off all that time and effort as a loss. So SMPs will probably start getting pretty difficult to get into.

Think about improving your app in other ways in the meantime also. Volunteer, shadow, the whole nine yards.

Good luck!

I've taken calc-based physics 1 & 2. Do you think it would be OK to take a non-calc based physics instead?

Yea man. I took algebra based physics and my pre med advisors said it didn't matter. Getting a good grade in calc based physics is impressive, but algebra based is all that is needed for med school prep and MCAT.

I'd focuse on UD sciences instead though. Handle your other C work and then reassess. Calc based physics is really hard, so having gotten Cs in that class won't be the end of the world. If you can demonstrate achievement in UD classes, it won't matter.
