Hey all,

Was looking for some general advice after searching through the forum.

My situation is a bit unique and was wondering what you guys would suggest.

I am currently a graduate working fulltime in research and was looking to apply to DO with a sGPA 3.2 and cGPA of 3.4.

I received Cs in Biochemistry and Genetics and they were both 4 credit courses.

My job offers tuition reimbursement so I was planning on retaking them to make my resume look better and improve my sGPA.

BUT, the courses are now only 3 credits at my university and all nearby universities.

I'm guessing it probably is not worth it to move and quit my job to replace two Cs at another university far away.

So should I?
1.) Definitely find another university to retake lots of courses
2.) Take the 3 credit ones to show I can do well even though it won't factor into GPA.
3.) Take other upper level science courses?

I feel biochem and genetics are important classes so I sort of want to take them over upper level.

Thanks!

Just to let you know, if you retake the classes, the grade won't be replaced since the credit hours are lower than the original courses.

That is understood which is why this becomes a harder choice and why I was looking for some input on the situation.

Thanks!

I guess it would depend on your MCAT. If you can turn two C's into A's it should, A) help your GPA somewhat, and B) show them that you are capable of making A's in two difficult classes. Best of luck. But if you nail your MCAT I wouldn't do it because you would be taking a big risk quitting your job and what not.

I needed to take a genetics course for MSUCOM and they accepted an online upper level genetics course through Oregon State University's extended campus/distance learning. It's four credits, not crazy expensive, the material covered is pretty standard, and it's a very doable 4.0. Just an idea 🙂

I also agree that you may want to see how you do on your MCAT first. I also had C's in biochem and orgo II, but scored an 11 on the bio section. But I also had some pretty extreme extenuating circumstances going on the semester I took those two courses. I was planning on retaking a couple of them if I didn't get into MSUCOM my first time around, but I did--so there definitely can be some forgiveness depending on your circumstances. Good luck!
