Ok, so Im in my third year in undergrad and want to retake Calc I. I got an F in it the first time around. During that time, my father was in the hospital in NYC. I live about 70 miles north of the city. He was really not doing to great during that time and felt that spending time with him was more important that making sure Calculus was good. He is out of the Hospital now and I won't be making that 70 mile (one way) trip anymore. I feel like I am ready to take Calc but should I? This is also the case with BIO 101 which I got a D+ in (same semester). Thanks in advance.

Well the best thing to do during that semester would have ben to withdraw and retake. But yes you should retake those courses now and attempt B or higher.

OK thanks for the reply. I have withdrawn from a few classes already though... I didn't want med schools to think that I keep withdrawing from classes.

Retaking the same course will only benefit you if you go for a DO, which allows grade replacement. If you want to do MD, the original and retake grades will simply be averaged together, same as just taking a new class. For MD, it would actually be better to take the next level in the series (Calc II and Bio II) and do well (B or A) to both show you can handle the material and move you forward academically.
