I am currently applying for 2011 admission. My stats are competitive:

3.76 cum gpa
3.66 science gpa
34Q MCAT (11, 11, 12)
A lot of research experience
Decent volunteer work
Good amount of other EC's and service work

My biochemistry grade in undergrad was a B-. I have already graduated. During this year, I am working as a researcher at a very well known hospital in the craniofacial surgery department. Would it be worth it to retake biochem in my year off? How would i go about doing this? My AMCAS is already in, how would I notify my schools?

Thanks in advance.

Simple answer...hell naw you should not retake. You have a competitive app so jus enjoy the ride. This process is stressful enough without you adding a biochem course retake.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I guess that makes my life easier. Thanks again. Best of luck to everyone in the admission process...

Don't retake it. It MIGHT be worth re-taking a required class like gen chem or physics. You really need to get an A if you re-take anything, and I don't think it's worth it unless your top-choice school requires biochem (only a few do).

My stats are similar to yours. Biochem II was the only class in which I got a B in all four years...I took it with a 23 credit course load in my last semester of undergrad, and I honestly wasn't very motivated to study. It was dry, taught poorly, and I didn't put much time into it. After the (killer) final, I was honestly praying that I got the C I needed to graduate. Coming from a straight A (and A-) student, everyone I knew was shocked that I was so anxious...not about getting an A, but merely passing!

I'm letting the grade stand. If I got a C, I might consider re-taking it for a better grade to prove to med schools and myself that I'm capable of an A in the class. But a B is good enough. The biochem we'll learn in med school is more interesting anyway...it's much more clinically relevant.

Your stats are very good, and I don't think getting an A in the class will change your chances enough to warrant the hard work required to do so.
