I recently graduated from undergrad with a less than 3.0 GPA. My science GPA is pretty bad as well.

I'm thinking of retaking classes I got C's and D's in at a community college. I have about 20 credits I would like to retake. I think my GPA could really improve with AACOMAS's retake policy.

From what I've seen, DO schools don't really mind if you re-take classes at a CC vs a 4 year university, correct?
I would just like to save money, if possible.

I would like to retake pre-reqs like Orgo and Biochem, and I also would like to retake a Genetics and Cellular Bio class. The CC near me also offers Anatomy and Physiology, which I thought would be helpful.

Credit wise the classes match up or are greater at the CC (at the CC orgo is 4 credits while Orgo 2 was 3 at my university). The credits for the classes have to be greater or equal than the original class, right?

Does the level have to be the same or anything like that? Just wondering if there are any details I have to keep in mind if I end up re-taking these classes.

Would it also be a good idea to take other science classes that I haven't taken in Undergrad (like Microbio for example) to give me more science background and boost my GPA?

Thanks for your time!

Yes make sure the credits match up or are greater. The course ID numbers don't so matter since schools use their own unique ID system. But don't try using "intro to chem" to replace Ochem, for example. Save your $$ by going to the CC and get those As!

Best of luck

Go for it. The CC courses will be much cheaper and you will probably get more one-on-one attention. Just make sure you do everything you can to get all A's.

This is not a good idea.

IT'SSSS GREATTT! (In my best Tony the Tiger voice)

It will be OK to do so.

That's what I am doing. You already probably took it at a 4 year college the first time.

Ok, could somebody please clear this up for me because I have heard different things. Do medical/dental schools accept community college undergraduate classes and specifically pre-reqs? Thanks

I have a sister in dental school (I'm justing lurking). You're allowed to take cc courses (including prereqs) as long as you don't reach more then 60 hours. That's the max they accept.

But some schools (Harvard, BU, Tufts) don't accept ANY cc classes. I think those are the only private schools. But most schools are okay with it.

Glad to see the tide is finally turned on taking pre-reqs at a community college. For so long there was this stigma about it. (Just look around and you'll see numerous posts regarding the topic.)

I think most ad-coms understand that older students who go this route, do so not because community college is deemed "easier" than a 4-year institution...but rather most older applicants are working full-time and it's simply a convenience factor and/or are on a budget.

I did/am doing all of my pre-reqs at a community college, except for one upper-level Biochemistry course which some schools are starting to require now. I'm not worried at all about it effecting my chances.

For DO, this is not a problem at all. I speak as someone admitted with 100% CC post-bacc taking the sciences for the first time.
