Hey I was wondering would it look bad to retake gen chem/ organic chemistry at a JC? before applying to SMP?

I still have to take my mcats, before I apply for the SMP my adviser recommended to keep improving my undergrad gpa.

I'm still undecided on D.O or M.D. Hence for M.D program I know it won't improve my GPA but it will show that I am dedicated. I made my mistakes, and I'm willing to spend time retaking the stuff. As for D.O, hopefully they will accept the grades even if its from a JC?!

Thank you so much for any feedback 🙂

not enough info to say...have you taken all the pre-reqs? What were your grades in these classes? General rule of thumb - retake anything below a C for allo (most demand nothing below a C, so without retaking you are screwed)....what is your cumulative GPA, how many hours before you graduate?

CC is OK for classes, but retaking a pre req just to get a higher grade at the CC is kind of sketchy...so are you still in university, because going to CC to take pre-reqs instead of at your Univ is very sketchy...

Not a good idea for MD or DO. If you are going to retake, take them in an environment similar to the first time (ie a university).

Your low grades already look like you weren't up to the task (whether or not you were) and taking them at a CC/JC will look like you couldnt hang the first time so you opted for the easier route. This wont look good whether you decide MD or DO

GPA is 3.21. Graduated from University already. Taken all the prereq. for the pre-med (Finished bio, physics, gen chem, o. chem) Just didn't too well there. I got C's for gen chem, C+ for organic chemistry. And for calculus, on the last series, Calc C, I got a C. A C in statistics as well (Because UCLA needed stats)

I would not bother retaking unless you are sure you can earn As and plan to apply DO (osteo replaces the first grade, allo just averages the new grade in with the old)...also, you have a good target range GPA for SMPs so retaking won't help that much (will certainly delay your progress, though)...your BCMP could probably use boosting, though, so maybe taking some upper level sci courses instead of retaking...

Someone else may have a different opinion on retaking pre-reqs with a C...start studying for the MCAT with plenty of lead time (say 5 or 6 months, shoot for a Jan/Feb test date)...
