AADSAS will average the 2 grades. it is possible to still have a great gpa. i got 2 D's as an undergrad...when i retook the courses I got A's. my gpa with the averaging was still over a 3.6.

Ok, but this is confusing, because my school has a forgiveness policy in which once you retake the class only your new grade is used for your GPA...does anyone know if that changes things?

You pretty much add in all the college level courses you've taken in your entire life (including but not limited to classes you've repeated, classes you've failed even if you retook them, and classes taken overseas), and calculate your GPA.
I hope this comes to use for a lot of you because I wish I knew. If I did, I wouldn't have taken repeats as light as I did.

It does not. Only with regard to your school does that matter.
When you copy your grades from your transcript to the AADSAS site you must include all of the grades. The only exception to this would be if the "F" does not appear on your transcript. If it's not there, you don't have to put it in.
I'm not sure how your school is, but as far as all the JC's, UCI, and UCLA, they record your nonpassing grade with a line through it. It's still considered a failing grade.
I heard that private schools inflate your grades, where drop classes don't show up as an W even if you drop it on the very last day, and failing classes that were repeated are omited from transcripts.
I guess it just depends on your institution. According to the AADSAS Instructions, they require that you record both failing grade and repeated grades.
