can someone tell me if DO medical schools average the two grades on classes that have been retaken or do they just take the higher grade? also can someone tell me what the average gpa for accepted students is usually? thanks.
I got 4 C+s (Chem1 Chem2 Orgo2 and Microbiology)...would it look bad if I retook all those classes? My overall Gpa is a 3.3 and my science is a 2.9. If i got high Bs or A's in those my science would jump up to a 3.2~3.3 and my overall would be around a 3.5. But would that look bad or should I just go ahead and keep those Cs and just finish strong with my 30 credits that i have left.

I worry about retaking too many classes. I slacked off my first two years because I honestly wasn't happy with my school, classes or life in general so I can't say i made any effort towards anything.
anyway - that garbage aside, I feel like these same classes are pulling my GPA down.
Won't the schools know that you're just trying to raise your GPA by retaking these classes?
It would look suspicious to me.
Anyone have any experiences with this where the interviewers might ask why you took so many classes again?
retaking classes is ok if that helps you prepare for the MCAT, but you shouldnt do it to gain any ground, its better to take higher level classes and do well on them. I dont advise re-taking classes to boost your g.p.a
I disagree with the above poster. If retaking classes was a bad thing then I don't think they would do grade replacement. The grade replacement encourages retakes.
Where are you people getting the idea that retaking courses would look bad? On the contrary, it shows that you're willing to work harder and improve yourself. Perseverance and dedication can get you far in medical school admissions. If you feel you can retake courses and get much better grades the second time around, then by all means go for it.

thanks for helping to see things from that point of view.
you're pretty awesome. 🙂
also...i will be graduating in may2010. if i apply this year, and i retake classes in the fall and winter semester of my senior year, how does the DO application process work that out?
will my grades be updated for them and replaced when I am done with the classes?
what happens to my application then? does it just sit there or what's up with that...
After you've gotten the new grades, you can send an updated transcript to AACOMAS. It won't help with schools that reject you before they get the new grades, but it could help with schools whose applications are pending.
