There use to be a post on this topic.
I was wondering if anyone in this position ( had the interview but was told to retake the DATS in order to increase the chances of admissioins) decided not to retake the test and has recieved an acceptance?
Thanks!
Beagle
I have decided to retake my DATS...

hi Beagle,

I want to retake the DAT too, but i am not certain about chances to get accepted even after you retook the test. What do you think? What about the timeline if you decide to retake the DAT ?

By the way, I emailed the admission committee and asked for their opinions. They told me that it would help to retake the test to increase my chances.

You're not alone, I am keeping my finger-cross for this. Good luck to you . I hope someone could give us some advise regard this situation.

I feel that my DAT score this time around will be even lower so I am worried about retaking. Does anyone know if NYU can review your file as is, and if they reject you, can you retake, and then have them reopen your file???
A member on this forum has told me his situation that is similar to ours. He was told to retake the DATS by one school, but told them he was not planning on it. Well, he got accepted afterall.
Gives us hope!!!

hi guys,

One of my good friends last year applied to NYU and was told at his interview to retake the DAT's. He got a conditional acceptance to NYU if he retook the DAT's. He rejected their offer. In mid-April NYU sent him an official acceptance and a scholarship for $80,000 spread over four years. Now he is a D1 at NYU. He was going to reapply for 2003.

I think NYU and BU are known to act like your DAT score is too low to give you a scare, but when no one is taking their offers then they realize who really want the seats and give them the offer.

Best of luck,

I agree with what Desi has posted.

For those who were asked to retake the DAT (or were specifically told that a higher DAT would help their admissions into NYU), what other schools have you heard from? Is NYU your top choice?

How you play the game from here is going to depend on your answer to those two questions. I'm assuming that you have not been accepted to any other schools, OR that NYU is your top choice.

I would wait until after the Jan 16 date before committing to anything. NYU might send out a slew of acceptances then, and yours might be one of them.

With NYU, you always need to keep in mind that admissions just isn't nearly as competitive as it is with other schools. That does not mean it isn't a good school, but it does mean some other things. In any event, know that NYU has to send out *many* acceptances to fill the class, and that you might be one of those, no matter what you've been told already.

If NYU is your top choice, and you simply must attend there, then do this: call the admissions director and the dean, each individually. Explain why you want to attend NYU, and explain what you will contribute to the program both as a student and an alumni. Let each of them know that if you receive an acceptance to the school, you will forward the required deposit right away (overnighting it if necessary).
I can tell you that this works nearly 75% of the time, and letting the admin. peeps know that you WILL attend the school if you receive an acceptance (and that you WILL send $$$ right away) is usually enough to have them take a file that is sitting on the fence and push it to the admitted pile. Only do this if you are serious about the school and wish to commit. Doing this without true intent of matriculating ruins the process for others.

Good luck!

NYU is continuing interviewing, but lots of people with a 14 (in one subject, not average) and 16, 17 average. So, I believe that u guys are in good shape. Continue to call and be straight forward to them. Lots of people are cancelling NYU, so wait until after Jan 15, it's probably be more effective.
Study the DAT for now (to be on the safe side).
Good luck
😀

i'll be declining NYU's offer. hope that will help someone.

Thanks for all the help.
Are you guys saying that I should wait until January 16th to tell them I will not retake the DATS and would like for them to review my file as is?
January 14th, I should know if I have been taken off the waitlist at Indiana U....
Thanks again!

Beagle,

The best way to approach this situation is to call Amy Knowles, etc. and tell her your situation and how much you would love to go to NYU. However, due to various circumstances you do not feel fully prepared for the DAT. Emphasize how much you want to go to NYU and she maybe able to suggest a possible alternative. Don't be discouraged if she sounds negative and acts like that is not a good thing. This is another tactic of theirs, to give you the guilt trip and act like NYU is too good for you. Just illustrate your interest and passion and see where that takes you. Like Gavin said 75% of the time it will work in your favor.
