What offers can a newly trained retina fellow entering workforce expect to receive?

What do established private practice retina surgeons make?

Thanks

one milllllllllllllllllllion dollars....
couldn't resist.
With HMO's like Kaiser it's about 300k starting, plateau at about 400k. private practice 200k reaching much higher into 600k. of course people make much more, there are always exceptions.
Either way it's a lot of money, more than one needs to live

trust me, u want optho--- u will get money--lots of it! enuff for you to wipe ur butt with

Do retina specialists make more than other ophtho specialists? How much more do specialists make than general ophthalmologists (non-fellowship). Just curious.

they make a lot more, probably twice as much, but before you rush off and sign up. remember, most vitrectomies aren't as elective as cataracts. mac on rd, you'll be going, in. intraocular foreign body you're there. There are a lot of late hours, and weekends. The retina doc in my group works a lot more than I do.

What surgeries, if any, are elective for retina specialists?

vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage from dm, mac hole repair, membrane peel, mac off rd can wait a couple days, vitrectomy for vitreomacular traction are a few. I'm sure there are more. Of course PRP, focal, ivk, pdt don't have to be done that day or night in many cases.

This is what Senator Hillary believes. This is not true.

If it were true, ophthalmologists wouldn't mind getting their Medicare reimbursements cut almost every year. A few HMO's are cutting cataract reimbursement to $300. If Wal-Mart gets involved, and it has started hiring primary care MD's, expect Wal-Mart to pay the ophthalmologist $99.

Sooner or later, the government is going to require electronic medical records. The companies will charge $50,000-75,000 and a hefty monthly fee, yet Medicare will not pay extra if you have it.

The day were the ophthalmologist who is inexperienced in business will be at a moderate risk for bankruptcy is fast approaching. I've heard of MD's who are not ophthalmologist become bankrupt. Of course, not that many but those that did were not idiots or alcoholics.

what would you estimate the starting and average salaries are for a general ophthalmologist? also, how easy is it for general ophthalmologists to find a job in the northeast...would you say it is competitive bc of the higher concentration of ophtho residencies, as well as established ophthalmologists, located in the northeast?

thanks!

There's a group out of pennsylvania that conducts surveys, they have a bit of data, some years are quite skewed b/c of too few points. Can't remember the name, it's something like health.... and they are located in pennsylvania do a google search. anyway they have a free survey with a lot of details. Salaries get skewed by a retina guy responding to the 200k he got. anyway seems starting salary is about 120-150 for small group private practice, HMO 180-240k. Hospitals can offer anywhere from 180 and up salary guarantee, and money to start your practice. Though these are hard to find, and often not in the most desireable cities b/c they don't have to offer this. base salaries only. Bonuses are hard to get typically in your first year. I'm really busting my tail to try and get my bonus. Saw 33 patients today and did 4 lasers. But you have to expect your boss to profit off of you a bit, otherwise why bring someone in. This applies mainly for highly desirable areas. Think about it would you spend about 180k after benefits etc, to make no profit, and eventually turn over your business to someone. I don't think so.

Elective, as in not essential in the way that repairing a ptotic eyelid is not essential (or can be delayed indefinitely)? None. Non-clearing vitreous hemorrhages afford some flexibility in scheduling surgery, as to macula-off retinal detachments, but surgery is still medically necessary. There are no elective surgeries in the retina repertoire that would be the equivalent of a cosmetic blepharoplasty or browlift.
