Hey Opthies,

When do most opthies retire? Seems like deterioriation of fine motor skills affects opthamologists more than most surgeons because of the delicate nature of the surgeries? Until what age do most opthies do surgery? What options are available to them when they stop doing surgeries?

Thanks 😎

I've noticed that older MDs tend to become more medical ophthalmologists as they age (you know, spending all their time in clinic managing diseases nonsurgically). I have no idea about an average age for that, but practicing just medical ophthalmology is a good option once you decide to stop doing surgery (for any reason).

I recently shadowed an 81 year old ophthalmologist but I'm pretty sure he too does only medical opthalmology.
