hello,

unfortuantely the flight i'm taking (pinnacle via NWA), my carry on has to be checked in and 'returned planeside'.

does this mean i check it in at the counter, and receive it off the tarmac? or do i still have to go to a baggage carousel?

Normally it means you carry it with you until just before you board, then hand it over to the crew, someone stows it and you get it back on the apron before you go back into the terminal.

No normally about it DKM, you got it right.

Usually it's for the smaller regional jets. They take your ticket, put a tag on your bag, and then had it to someone as you get on the plane. When you get off they unload them and you pick your bag up. Highly recommended...very rarely can they get lost.

You carry it through security.

You guys are faster 😉

On my way to a wedding one time the airline lost my bag in this process. Needless to say the $50 they offered for personal effects covered neither the tux nor the gift..

You drop it off as you walk down the jetway in MSP or DTW and pick it up in the jetway when you get in to Rochester. 😉

wow guys, so i don't even check it through at the NWA counter before security? it makes sense, otherwise it wouldn't be "carry on" at all.

so, i have my boarding pass..i can go through security...and hand it to them before boarding. sweet 🙂

thanks 🙂

uh..what is a jetway ? lol. i don't travel much, at all. 😕

yes, i am going from Toronto to MSP, and then MSP to Rochester.

The "hallway" that leads to the plane.

That right there is why I avoid NWA.

As others have said it's just dropping it off as you board and picking it up as you get off the plane. This is typical for regional jets and props when the overhead bins are too small to handle the normal carry on bags. Checked bags will still be checked at the counter and picked up at the carousel. No worries...

why is that a good reason to avoid NW?

MSP - RST is a short segment but it's much better to deal with security, parking, etc in RST than in MSP making it VERY worthwhile

how do they lose the bag? unless someone stole it (unlikely since the point where you leave the bag is only accessible to those who are boarding the plane and the flight and ground crews) or it someone fell of the cart in the <10 yards that they transport the bags to the plane (also unlikely since a bag on the ground there would be easily seen by the ground crew since it would simply stand out), I just don't believe that.

this thread is sweet, i totally love droppin my suitcase off cause then i dont even have to lift it up and put it in the overhead, nor do i have to be worried about all the overheads being taken, planeside checkin is freggin sweet

When the bag is taken planeside it is placed in the fuselage cargo area with the checked bags. In my scenario there were several regional jets leaving from the same terminal and all planeside checked bags were thrown near one another in a central area (near the terminal). My bag ended up in Houston instead of Chicago. I didn’t understand it at first myself, “How can you take the bag from me at the plane and lose it on the way to putting it under the plane.” But lets be realistic here, we’re dealing with an airline  ! They are the epitome of Murphy's Law "If any thing can go wrong it will."

I did that thing where you check your bag at the gate a few times. It's really not that bad. You drop it off, they put it away for you, and you get it back when you land. You take it through security, and hold onto it until right before you board, at which point the person at the gate will give you a tag to place on your bag, and then youll leave it by all the other bags. If you have to go outside to get the plane, then you usually leave it by the stairs. The flight crew will tell you where to put it.

For my RST flight, the planesides were sent straight to the carousel. The jetway crew will let you know if this is the case.

My Rochester trip was the worst of the interview season in terms of flight problems—all weather related. I was delayed three hours on the arrival and around 2AM the day of my return I received a call informing me that everything but the 6AM flight had been canceled. The 6AM white-knuckler probably should have been canceled as well. Nothing like sliding down a runaway through snow drifts to make one reconsider just how quickly you really needed to return to the lab.

NW seems to have a fetish for taking really odd routes to get you anywhere. I've never seen a decently direct flight from them. I'd rather pay the extra $50 and fly AA or UA and not have to go 500 miles out of my way to see the MSP or DTW airports when I'm going in completely the opposite direction (if you're heading to Rochester from Toronto, is it really that useful to fly to MSP first?). I'm figuring you're possibly a pilot for them, and it's nothing against the pilots, the cabin crew or any person other than whomever plans out the routes.

RST is 80 miles south/southeast of MSP, in the case of a YYZ - RST flight, it's probably the most direct and simple routing possible. (If you get a wx cancellation MSP - RST you can always rent a car or take a shuttle if you really need to get there, missing the AA ORD-RST flight, which happens to be late over 70% of the time and is the only other option, will leave you sleeping in O'Hare.)

Oh, I was thinking Rochester, New York.

Hey NovemberWhiskey aren't you also located in AMS and NRT? 😉
