Hi,
I'll starting my first year at USUHS soon and I have been reading some threads in the Allopathic section regarding 'essential' learning materials (ie. BRS, High Yield, etc...) Does anyone know what materials are provided to us and what additional texts/softwares/supplies they also got on their own?

Thanks a lot.

Review books, etc. were not part of what was issued to us last year. We got our textbooks, notes, bone boxes, & PDA's. Best advice I can give is for you not to worry about getting review books and additional materials till you start and you've had a chance to evaluate your classes, issued materials, schedule, individual study methods, etc. All the books you've been seeing referenced in the Allopathic forum are worth considering, but it's going to be an individual choice. FWIW, I only acquired 3 additional books last year: Champe & Harvey (Biochem), Baby Moore (Anatomy), & Costanzo BRS (Physiology). I also picked up the Stedman's compact dictionary for my PDA. Your sponsor should also be able to provide you with advice as well.

Enjoy the rest of your summer,

Also, the library at USUHS has most of those review books on the shelves so I recommend checking out a book before actually buying it.

Hi, welcome to USUHS! You won't be issued review books at USUHS, but you will be issued a lot of textbooks that you won't ever read... 😕
Since you will start out with biochem and anatomy, you won't need anything right away. The biochem notes and old tests are the only way to study for that class, and I'm really not the person to ask on how to study for anatomy. A lot of people used the BRS for anatommy. Also, like denali said, wait until you talk to your sponsor. A lot of times they are willing to part with any old review books that they don't need.

Yeah, I second that one--most of the books are not useful. It would be a lot better if they gave a book fund and allowed students to select the books that they think would me most helpful.

Thanks to all the inputs. I'm going through the 2-weeks orientation program right now, and in fact, they have scheduled for us to have lunch with our sponsor some time in the second week. I'm also dying to ask him about his military summer experiences. Our OBC experience down in Fort Sam was awesome! I'll definitely check out the books in the LRC before buying them, and I hope the bulletin board in the USUHS's intranet have postings with similar concerns. Thanks again.
