just want to see what kind of crowd i can draw in with this thread...

IM WONDERING... are there dentists/dental students out there that are riding motorcycles? want to hear opinions whether you do or don't... i'm thinking about getting a new bike... rode for like 4 years and got my last bike lifted... is it worth it?

I rode for many years but sold my bike a couple of years ago. I think of getting the Ducati Monster all the time, but right now it's not financially feasible for me. There is a risk in riding, but if you're passionate about it (and smart about it) do what makes you happy. Just my opinion.

I started a similar topic like this on dental town b/c I was curious if i should get another bike again. The last time I had a bike was my freshmen year of undergrad, it got stolen later that summer.. =(. Anyway, I've been itching to ride again b/c I loved it so much (2003 r1 😍 haha), I was originally planning to get another bike during dental school but started to think it through thorougly. And I figure the cons far outweigh the pros.
pros- very very very very fun, can get to places faster, parking is a lot easier, maybe pick up a chick here and there😉). Wheelies!!!! haha.
cons- in our field, we will be working with our hands!! we fall and it's basically over for our careers. You can be the best rider in the world, but if you get hit by a car, you're basically ****ed. Also, there is a high theft rate for motorcycles (at least where im from🙁). Expensive ass insurance for a 1000ccs!

Dont get me wrong, I love riding, but i guess it's time to grow up..

You, my friend, are going to make a great dentist. That's a pretty cool project.

I drive a KLR650 (dual sport bike) around town and an old VW camper for the longer trips.

I referenced my web site with a bunch of my other projects in some of my personal statements. I suspect it helped me get into D school.

The bike is a full suspension dual 20"" wheel design. The frame is made of carbon fiber cloth and epoxy. The ride is smooth, comfortable, fast, and fun. I roll off curbs on it all the time and it just keeps going.

I still ride. I have an '06 Yamaha R1 and start dental school in a month and don't plan on stopping riding for a long time. Only thing I've done different is cancel my order on a duc 1098 since its too nice of a bike to worry about getting knocked over, but I don't see a problem with riding while in dental school. Just don't be stupid and watch out for everyone else who can't drive or see bikers.

Rain or shine, I ride my SV to school every day. Only takes me 15 min door to door. If I had to take the bus, it would take over an hour because of traffic. A lot of the students here, especially ones from Utah and Arizona, grew up riding dirt. Since we have free motorcycle parking at school, a lot of people picked up bikes to commute. We've even organized a couple group rides led by one of the restorative faculty at school. I think there's only been a couple mishaps so far, no broken hands or wrists though. Just a few sprained knees, but you can still see patients with a bum leg.

Btw, anyone catch the motogp race this weekend? I think Stoner's got it in the bag.

eh... im not a fan of the yamahas.... i like the kawi or gsxr... i was actuallly thinking about getting the new gsxr 600.... i got a good price on it... and that is why i have thought about getting it again....

I'm moving to cali for school and I kind of played with the idea of getting a small bike or a scooter or something... the thing is I'm 5'3" and 110lbs, and I don't know how I would pick up a serious bike if it fell over...

any suggestions on what I might look into seeing as how I'm clueless about this and a tiny girl? thanks....

you mentioned you're clueless about bikes, and this is a bike that a lot of people like to learn on since it's light and easy to handle.

I rode a Vespa PX150E while in school. This was the last Vespa made in the retro style. Got about 80 miles to the gallon and reached 100 km/hr. I think they are still being made now, but are not available in the US. My clothes smelled of burnt 2-stroke oil when I got to my classes. Then I discovered Castrol manufactured "perfumed" synthetic 2 stroke oil! I then smelled like I just came out of the shower after I used that...

I would say try out a moped to get used to being on two wheels. I know we dont have time before school starts and all but idealy you want to take a motorcycle course to see how well you can even handle a bike. If all is good, definitely jump on a 250/500 or even 600 (i.e. r6?). 5'3'' is not the best height in the world, but not the worse either😉 I know a couple of girls and guys around that height if not shorter and handle their bike pretty well.

R6 is a good choice in my opinion. I got my R1 before I got into dental school, and now I see how unpractical it is. 182 horsepower to go a few miles around town is overkill. just my opinion

182 hp? You must have a newer ONE😉. Definitely not practical to have at all....but so damn fun!! I am a 02-03 r1 fan b/c I like that low end torque😍

I saw 1st hand WAY too many results from "organ donor" cycles while rounding the with the OMFS fellow during my residency years. I need a functioning brain and 2 working hands to continue my career and while accidents can just as easily occur while driving in a car rather than riding a bike, I'll take my chances with a seat belt and 6,000+ lbs of steel around me over that of some leather(maybe) and a helmet(optional) anyday.

And if I had any thoughts of getting a bike, when my kids were born, that further solidified my views.

Lastly, I leave in an area with many miles of "scenic roads" where just about every weekend where the temp id 50 or above and its dry out droves of weekend warriors alll leathered up on the Harley's and Goldwings roll through going between various biker bars and coffee shops. Atleast 2/3rds of the time on Monday when reading through my local paper, you'll find a report of another bike vs. car or bike vs tree accident. Last week for example was a bike vs. car where the guy on the bike had is right arm severed completely off just above the elbow
Reattachement was successful(so far per the paper), and now he's faced with a LONG recovery between the arm and the fractured legs and brain injury(even with the helmet).

It would be mghty tough to pay off those d-school loans if that was you.

Can you listen to music when you ride, I would think that the sound of the engine would drown out any music. I love music and when I drive is really some of the only time I can listen uninterrupted(3 kids prefer Laurie Berkner to Phish)
I can see the allure but not for me, known to many people hurt and even killed because of bikes and unaware/reckless motorists. Just tell me you people where helmets, I have lived in two states without helmet laws and it drives me crazy seeing these young people without helmets speeding past me. I know a helmet can only offer limited protection, but I wouldn't see why anyone wouldn't do everything no matter how small to improve their own chances of survival.

yeah, you can listen to music via Ipod under the helmet (or heaven forbids w/o the helmet).

you can listen to music but i LOVE hearing the sound of my exhaust (i have a full system termignoni)...got a deep growl. i agree that getting an R1 is useless in the sense that it's too powerful (btw whoever said they have an 180 hp R1 should know that it's really 150 hp to the rear wheel). but regardless that much hp is ridiculous! i have an r6, love it to death. insurance aint too bad, doesnt get stolen as much as 1000 class bikes. i unfortunately will sell my bike depending on where i go to dental school. if its in boston for example im selling it...if arizona then i keep it! i love bikes! few cars are as fun as bikes
