Right time for PharmD program?

Hi---
I'm wanting to pursue the PharmD program (for entry in Fall 2007). The only thing that would be holding me back is wanting to have a baby in the next 2 to 3 years. My boyfriend and I are soon to be engaged and married (within a year); he is very supporting of my going back to school and my goals. The programs I am interested in have summers off during the first 3 years of the program.

Is it common (to have children) during the PharmD program?

One of my classmates is due in 1 month and we're PS-2's. I'd say if you can, plan it so that your delivery coincides with summer.

It's not common, but not unheard of. It's also not recommended. If you do it be aware that you can't expect to make the most of both experiences. It's going to be difficult.

It's not common but it's not undoable. Just be prepared to give up any free time you might have had, which is not a lot to start with.

You hear success stories of people pulling it off... but at the same time it could cause A LOT of stress on your school, marriage and pregnancy. I guess it depends on what kind of support you have near you... like grandparents, aunts/uncles etc. living close and being willing and able to help out. I am going to be 25 when I start school and I will be waiting until I graduate to have kids. I need at least a year of being just a grown up with a job- not a student and not a mom!
But good luck with all your choices... I do think waiting until you're through your first year would be a good idea so that you have a realistic view of what kind of time/energy pharmacy school will require!

Are you much older than the average entering pharmacy student? If you don't think that age is a factor, then I would strongly suggest not rushing into school and children at the same time. I personally have found having and raising 2 toddlers to be quite stressful - I'm glad I didn't combine that with grad school at the same time. Mine will be 4 and 7 next year when I start pharmacy school - vastly different than a few years ago when I had a 3 year old and a new born. I guess I also have to admit that I have a prejudice for being married awhile before the kids come - we waited almost 10 years. Good luck with your decision.

Yeah, if your eggs arent going to stop in the next four years I would say to put if off until you finish school, you will have enough to do without worrying about middle of the night feedings, daycare and general mommy worries. Enjoy just being married for a while.

Assuming I get in this year, Im going to be 32 and my husband will be 35 when I graduate. We're still waiting until I finish school. But then again, neither myself nor my husband are dead set on having any children at this point.
