May I ask how much they are paying you as a Rite Aid Intern in California and have you ever worked at Rite Aid before?
I've worked as a clerk at Rite Aid for over a year and it's ok as long as you know what you're doing. If you've never had experience before, you will have one hell of a first month there learning the computer. If you work at a busy Rite Aid pharmacy with a drive thru, all i can say is good luck.

Every pharmacy is different, although the drugs on the shelves are classified by brand name and not drug name (i.e. hydrocodone is under V for Vicodin). Computer system really easy when you get used to it... you can research a patient's history from the register....Apart from that, it's really like any other pharmacy, unless you have a robot...(some do, some don't)

I intern at a rite aid in oregon. If your shelves are organized by brand name, (I've worked in rite aids that aren't) keep a generic>brand reference in your pocket or if you have a PDA, download epocrates and keep that with you. It will help you out tons for the first month or so when you are still learning brand/generic names and are trying to find where everything is located.

Once you get comfortable with their computer system, spend some time to learn how to write sig codes. For example, instead of writing out "take 1 to 2 tablets by mouth every 4 to 6 hours if needed for pain," just write t,1,to,2,tas,po,q4t6h,prn,f,pn. Once you get good at it you will be able to process scripts much faster because it's less to write, it reduces spelling errors, and when you use sig codes, it automatically calculates the days supply for you. I would also recommend learning the "hot keys" so you don't have to use the mouse. Again, this will just make you faster.

I really don't have any tips for dealing with insurance because there are so many stupid things you have to learn. This just takes time and practice. An experienced tech will be an invaluable resource in helping you deal with ins problems.

This is my first time work and I'm not getting paid. I got this internship through my school and will be in it for 10 weeks and they add a little note about it on my transcript. 🙂

mmm...sounds like you're from UCD. 😀

They'll give you a packet of procedures and stuff they expect from you your first day volunteering there. (At least thats what they did for me, in S. Davis.) It's really what you make of it though. Try to take the initiative to learn new things while you're there. It's great experience 👍

I was going to say the exact same thing! I interned at the Rite Aid on Russell Blvd with Tom in 2003. It's nothing but busy work. You go in, he gives you a generic/brand name drug booklet, you go around stocking the fast rack, take inventory on certain drugs so they can order more, and file insurance papers, etc.

Nothing to worry about. In fact, after 2 hrs of refilling bottles and inventory, you get bored. I used to just hunch down in the back and "look around." 😉 A good experience to learn what goes on in a pharmacy but as far as actually doing the work, you don't learn anything.

i didn't know they let you volunteer as an intern at Rite Aid? Anyways, Rite Aid is really cheap, compared to Walgreen. They are always understaffed and the pharmacists boss you around like a slave.

Ya, I've had a good experience with creighton's distance program. It's very well organized and I would highly recommend it 👍
