I wanted to know if anyone has any personal experience or knowledge about the Riverside Anesthesia Associates in Harrisburg, PA. I saw their ad on gaswork. With the Penn State program just up the road in Hershey, it begs the question why they need to recruit from farther away.

My main concern is that with the significant step-up between employee compensation and partner compensation, there could be a potential for revolving-door hiring.

I realize that Harrisburg is not the most desirable location by conventional standards (high-crime, poor payor mix, probably litiginous), but if that is the only reason Riverside has to cast a wider net, I can live with that, because they aren't responsible for those factors.

I met Dr. Joseph Answine at a PSA meeting in Philadelphia last year. He is the immediate past-president of the PSA. I believe he is the CEO of that group. He seemed like a decent guy. He is very active in politics at the state level, which is convenient being in Harrisburg - the capital. (I also met Dr. Joe Galassi, who is the current president, and who is practicing in Allentown.)

Great group. Great mix. If you go there you will have to be comfortable doing everything. They don't take anyone. Some of them, including Joe, do locums here at Penn State. They watch the residents mature and then pick the crem de la crem residents. Pretty smart actually. The buy in is steep. Partners make a killing and they are all great people. I play tennis with some of them. Others are ex-chiefs from Penn State. One of the guys in my graduating class is going there. Joe is my absolute favorite attending EVER! Such a cool guy. Very composed under pressure and one of the best anesthesilogists I've ever met.

Harrisburg and the surrounding area is not all that bad. I'm not a big city type of guy though. Philly, DC and Baltimore are all withing a couple of hours. You can get a real nice piece of property, new construction, 4500 square feet with an outdoor feel to it for a reasonable price 400-500k.

Another thing... the group has been around for ever and their future is very solid. They keep on getting bigger and bigger. I think they just took over another ASC or hospital.

Hope this helps.

Hi Copro and Sevo,

Thanks for the valuable input about Riverside. They have seemed like a good group thus far, and I'm glad to hear likewise from people who have some familiarity with them.
