Hello,

I've been a nurse for the past 5 years and I'm thinking of medical school in the near future. For those RN's who decided to change path, what classes were accepted by your medical school and what classes were you required to retake? Our nursing school required chem 1151/1152, human anat I/I, microbiology. Were any of those classes accepted by your school?
Advice greatly appreciated.

It depends on what your Chem classes covered. Were they classes that were prerequisites for Organic Chemistry? Or was it a survey class? Were the classes the same as those taken by chemistry majors or were they nursing-specific? If they were general chem and not weird pre-nursing classes you should be ok. But your next step is Organic Chemistry so you might want to work on a MOOC like one from MIT described here. You could also get a chem review book or an MCAT review book to see if you need a refresher.

Med school pre-reqs don't include micro or anatomy. The general consensus is one year of bio, one year of chem, one year of Ochem, and one year of physics with biochem required or recommended by many before the MCAT.

Med school did not take any courses from nursing schools. Generally, you'll have to start from scratch, I heard once that SOME D.O schools MAYBE take some nursing classes as science, but not sure how true that is.
Additionally, assuming you became a nurse traditionally through a bachelors program it's important also when you took those Chem classes, if you've been a nurse 5 years, I'm guessing its been about 5 years since you've taken Chem, it probably wouldn't hurt to retake Chem especially before taking Org Chem, but idk

Short answer: you’ve got 2 years of prerequisites to knock out before you can apply.

Hello all,

I am an RN with a MSN going on 2 years now, I received a Bachelors degree in Psychology. I have worked in med-surg but currently I am in psychiatry. I entered into an NP program and realized that somewhere down the line years from now I would feel as though something was missing but I have finally decided that medicine is the end all goal for me. Straight out of high school I was a cellular molecular biology major at SFSU but being naive and immaturity got the best of me and I didn't finish. 10 years later I have gotten the severe itch to go back where I started and restart my path to my dream career. This is not to say I don't love nursing because it has been a blessing and an honor to be so hands on with patients, but I am seeking more in depth knowledge in treating the patient as the lead provider. Long story short, I would like some pointers as I am trying to figure out how to organize taking these prereqs for medical school. I would like to know which classes would be best to be paired up with one another without risking good grades but also not stalling the study time I need to take the MCAT. Thank you.

The chem sequence is the longest, make sure to start it and then fill in extra time with other classes

100% get Chem sequence going and dont stop!
Chem 1/2 is some conceptual and tests basic algebra skills
Physics 1/2 simply put is harder algebra and word problems
Biology is basically read and memorize random stuff
Orgo is conceptual and some memorizing types of reactions and mechanisms

You can either pair gen chem and physics and get the math out of the way pr split them up so you arent doing all memorizing or all math at once.

Chem 1, Bio 1
Chem 2, Bio 2
Orgo 1, Physics 1
Orgo 2, Physics 2
Biochem, Genetics (if you want)

Or you could do
Chem , Phys
Orgo, Bio
Biochem

Obviously there is more combinations and these are generally common routes.
