I just got a letter of U Rochester. I am an alternate for the combined program. Anyone else in my boat? I really liked the program, but I am a little hesitant to pursue it because I feel like they view me as not quite good enough.

The statement: "Being an alternate to a program, even if you have the chance to move up the list and make it into the class, is just not good enough. Other places want me as a first choice. . . Why should I be leftovers for them. . ."

I know that statement is a little arrogant and that many people find happiness at schools they were waitlisted at, but I cannot help feeling that way.

Anyone else dealing with this strange emotion?

I have been waiting forever for my number one choice mstp, I interviewed there the first day of their interview, and sent an email to the director saying that I would definitely go if accepted, so I have to have been waitiing the longest of those who have interviewed...and it's frustrating to know that they gave out acceptances and are recruiting 3 other people who are probably will decline their spot .... right now I feel that I might just not even attend if accepted ... but who am I kidding...it's my numberone choice and would go there in a heart beat ....I just can't believe that the director are recruiting all these other people while knowing that I would attend for sure ....

Wow. You liked URochester? I got into an argument with the co-director when I interviewed and was rejected shortly thereafter. I can try to talk you out of even considering them if you want, just PM me 😉

In any case, good luck!

I really liked the cores and the korn bldg. There are several projects there I would love to get my hands on. . .😉

But, eh, there is a helluva lot of snow there. . . I will let you talk me out of it when I find out my standing with all of my apps. Thx!

Hay Isadella,

I got the exact same letter! Tough situation, I know. I liked it there too, although I have some questions about if I fit their institutional culture. Way I see it, only a particular number of people are lucky enough to fit an institution so well it's an exact match. Other than that, it's the game. They need, for the NIH, to see a particular diversity when they take a group picture of the class. For good reason. So if they've already accepted someone who fits too many parts of my "profile", or maybe my long-lost twin who managed to not sleep through a Biochem class I missed so their GPA is .01 higher, then I'm out. I won't be bummed about it, I just need to make sure I have a good gut feeling about the place I land in the month before I go.

Good luck!

On my interview, I remember that URochester gave this whole spiel about how their director found the COX-2 inhibitors (Celebrex, Vioxx) and how URochester was going to their patent on these drugs to make a whole lot of money for the school.

I thought anyone who also interviewed there and got this story would be interested in:

"Judge Turns Rochester's Golden Patent Into Lead"

Turns out that the patent was on the manufacture of this class of molecules, but that the judge sided with the pharmaceutical companies because they did all the development work beyond this.
