Hello, thanks in advance for your help! I am accepted at both Rochester and SUNY Upstate and am having a hard time deciding between these schools.
Rochester:
Pros:
-great clinical education
-liberal arts medical school/pathway program really really appealing to me (was a humanities major and want to include Spanish skills in education)
-really like the idea of living in Rochester (bike paths, progressiveness)
-small class size (104ish)
Cons:
-worried about gunners/pretentiousness of students (private schools attract wealthier students and maybe they'd be less chill??)
-$$
-an hour further from home and partner
-a lot of mandatory events compared to other schools? Was dragged on Reddit recently for "fake" non-mandatory lectures for one class.
Syracuse:
Pro:
-brother studies in area so we'd be together for 2 years
-close to Ithaca where I attended undergrad and LOVE
-much cheaper (IS resident)
-maybe chiller students
Cons:
-less resources
-larger class
-syracuse is less appealing to live in
-not as many supplemental programs like Rochester's pathways/biophyschosocial model
-not as great of a reputation
Both:
-P/F preclinical
-In-house exams
Summary: I like the location, resources, and humanities focus of Rochester a lot, but like the cost of Upstate and distance from home. For sure uninterested in the more competitive specialties/academic medicine but as of right now consider IM/FM/EM/obgyn.
