In honor of rank list entry opening in about 10 days I thought we could use a thread where people describe what they are using to rank programs (Or what they used/wish they used for those who are already past this point). For me:

1. Location, location, location - This is at least 20 times as important as anything else. I figure with a wife and baby, and me not being around, she will be miserable in an unfamiliar place with no friends or family. In turn she will use that horrible skill bestowed upon all women when they get married, making their husband feel bad.

2. The people - Do I like the residents, do I like the attendings, do the residents like the attendings, do the attendings give the residents the time of day, etc.

3. Clinical/educational experience - case volume, case variety, fellows stealing cases, do they at least have a curriculum, do they mandate lab time, etc.

4. Fellowship match

That is pretty much it. All of the other crap really just doesn't matter to me anymore. I definitely eliminated a lot of things from this list's first incarnation when interview season started.

How about the rest of you?

My list is almost exactly the same, but perhaps in a different order.

1. The people
2. Fellowship match
3. Location
4. Clinical/educational experience

I put the people (residents/attendings) first because I think that they largely determine how happy you will be and how much you will learn.

I have to say though that it's really hard to get a good sense of the people since they are all on their best behavior... oh well, I suppose we are too.

Tell me about it. I have to say I went on a second look and people seemed much more like "themselves".
