Are the room and board estimates for dental schools generally on the high end? I feel like there is no way you could be spending 18k a year for philly unless you are eating sushi for every meal and living in a nice penthouse

Generally, yes they do overestimate, better safe than sorry I guess.... and of course it varies by city but go ahead and budget out how much you expect to pay for living so you have a better expectation.
Rent, bills, food, insurance, gas, etc. On average I'd say you can blow by about $1500/month if you live alone and of course it'll dramatically go down depending on how many roommates you have.

Yes they do overestimate. The reason for that is because the estimated "cost of attendance" numbers are the maximum amount of loans you can take out. They don't want you running out of money, so they tend to play it safe and overestimate certain costs. If you are frugal, then you definitely won't be spending as much as they say for room and board.

I used my room and board money first year to buy beats and surround sound for my tv. now im broke, dont have a tv, and use 10 dollar headphones. SMAAHRT
