Any one have experience with this school? Well I took the MCAT in Sept 08 but I am retaking it this April or May. I know my MCAT score will improve.

However, I am thinking about applying to Ross because I don't want to wait another year.

This is a bad idea. I don't know much about Ross, specifically, but I do know that international grads tend to have a very difficult time matching for US residencies. Wait a year, get your scores, apply to US MD and DO schools -- don't handicap yourself for residency because you're impatient.

If you do decide to go to the Caribbean I'd also apply to AUC, and SGU...

From talking with people it sounds like AUC is the best place to live. The island is very touristy so you still have fast food, movie theater, etc.

SGU - the island isn't as nice but from what I hear it is the best of the big three.

Personally I'd vote you go to AUC. I have a friend who goes there right now and he seems to really like it. He said that they do try to flunk out those people who can't hack it, but if you can hack it it sounds like you'll have a good change at getting an internal medicine residency when you're done.

Good luck!

I currently attend Ross. A lot of what people will say about the school is based on their own preconceived notions of what to expect. There are people here on both ends of the spectrum. Some people find the school to be great, some hate it. I personally like the school. I think that the first semester of classes here are poor and it seems as though some of the professors don't want to teach that material and so they don't teach it too well. But after that, the 2nd semester of classes become systems based and are a lot better. I'm currently in 3rd semester and am appreciating the curriculum a lot more now that I see how they tied all the classes together. As with most schools, Ross has some good professors and some bad ones. Ross more or less tries to fail students out the first semester, so they can have the proper number of students graduating for their clinical spots. The first semester of Ross is like your first few pre-med classes, its a lot of weeding out. And a lot of people do drop out here, as in any caribbean med school. The reasons vary from not being able to cope with living on this island, missing family to not being able to handle the work. As far as the island goes, Ross may be on the worse island of the big 4, but they are starting a transfer to the Bahamas, so that's an improvement. Currently, they have a portion of 3rd and 4th semesters going to the Bahamas. The plan is for 3rd and 4th semester to completely be in the Bahamas. I'm assuming the whole school will shift at one point in time. That's my opinion.

Here's a quote from an email from a friend down in the caribbean.

"Ppl have nothing good to say about ross lately.5-8 yrs ago yes, i would say go. Now..no way. The island: Dominica is a 4th world country, they barely have enough food and if you drink water you risk getting Shigella ( you bleed through your rectum) And yes...i know 3 people that are in my class now that had to be airlifted out of dominica 2 for shigella, the other for Dengue fever. We have quite a few ppl from there, all horror stories. They also have a limited supply of medications/ doctors on the island and usually they come to your house, ask for cash and then treat you. The school has also depleted the islands pharmacy supply of adderrol, over and over, not bc they need it, but just to survive the material. thats sad...
Ross is not what it used to be, the only thing Devry is doing is riding on the "Ross medical school' coat tails. i could go on.."

ONCE again...you should do your own research and not rely on other people. Visit Dominica...the school..talk to current students and then make a choice.

Choose wisely. Especially if you choose a Caribbean school. I'm 4th year at Ross in NYC. Not a fan of the school in the least. I was too impatient to wait a full year to apply to US schools and chose Ross. I regret it all the time. They are purely a business and they don't hold up their end of the bargain. They accept many students and know that they will weed out at least 25% or more. They also end up having trouble arranging your clinical rotations in 3rd and 4th year even if you've done well all the way through. The island is a drag for the most part, but everyone just deals with it. The economy on the island is awful. Not much opportunity for those people. So, students bring in lots of money and they do their best to get in on it. The way they do things seems very backwards and takes adjustment to get used to. Easy to handle when you're not stressed out, but wears on you during stressful exam times. Also, there isn't much advising/mentoring/guidance to be found....at least not compared to what any of my friends who went to american schools describe. Just keep these things in mind and do your research by searching these forums and trying to talk to students who went there. Ross is great at spinning things and they invest a great deal in marketing. Many students end up feeling cheated and mislead if they don't arrive on the island knowing what to expect.
