Rotating Internship and Pathology

Hey Guys,

I'm currently applying to a pathology residency through the ACGME match. I've heard that since I am an osteopathic student, I would have to do an AOA approved rotating internship first. Is there any truth to that? And how do I get out of it?

My second question is, how many programs did you guys apply to and how many interviews did you get. I submitted my application mid september and so far only 6 interviews out of 25 programs. Is this normal?

You can check the requirements for state medical licensure here. Only a few states (like FL and MA) still require a traditional rotating internship for DOs. This shouldn't come as news.

6/25 isn't a good yield. Have you been rejected by the other 19 or have you just not heard anything?

Florida yes...MA no.... I am in MA with an unrestricted license, no rotating internship is needed.

two years ago i applied to 21 programs and was offered interviews at 20 of them (i'm not bragging, just giving you numbers like you asked for). i would agree that 6/25 is a low rate, but that said, with 6 interviews you still have a pretty good shot at matching. rarely do people go below their top 5 on their match list, so the total number after the top 5 probably doesn't matter most of the time. a suggestion i would offer is that if you have applied to programs in which you already have an interview scheduled for that city and haven't heard anything (ie, you applied to Duke and UNC and have an interview at UNC), call and ask. worst is you find out for sure you won't be interviewed there, at best they accomodate your request. once you get the interview, it won't matter whether you "barely" got it or not - you'll be considered based on your overall merits like other applicants.

I went to osteopathic medical school in Florida. While you technically needed to do an internship, there are ways to get your 1st year of pathology residency counted by the AOA depending on your 1st year rotations. Just go to their website & do a search.

Someone from my school was accepted & went to UM for residency w/out an internship.

As for the number of interviews you've gotten, it depends where you applied. For example, you probably wouldn't have gotten an interview at Johns Hopkins. Whether you took the USMLE & scored well also matters. Some programs are just not particularly DO friendly.
