I am a second year currently trying to get my schedule worked out for 3rd and 4th years. I am interested in EM, so when would be the best time to do my EM rotation (I am at LECOM-E and we do our EM rotation 4th year) ?

Also, what electives would you recommend for someone interested in EM ? I am currently thinking about anesthesia, radiology, ICU/CCU, ortho surg, trauma surg, and maybe pain mangement.

pianoman511,

all of the rotations that you had mentioned looked good. the one thing that I wanted to mention to you is that at LECOM-erie, you can still do elective rotations in the ER in your thrid year. I know that milcreek will allow you to do this, as well as clarion and meadville medical center. The two "big" hospitals in Erie (St. V's and Hamot) will require you to be in your fourth year.

That being said, if you show intrest in program at hamot you can call the residency director Dr. Risivi, and if you show intrest in the ER program at hamot, and ER in general, he has let 3rd year students do rotations in the ER before...

The rotations that will get you the most bang for your buck, will be other ER rotations, trauma, and ortho, with the addition of FP and primary care, cause I hate to say it but a large percentage of the stuff that you see in the ER is all primary care.

these should give you a good broad base for the ER. just make sure that you put some thought into the areas where you think that you would like to do your residency, and do rotations there. A little face time with the people who are going to be evaluating you is never a bad thing.

Reply back if you have other questions.

Hope this helps,

Kevin
