Which is more important a good step 1 score or away rotations? Due to the funky nature of my school and my lack of preparation for step 1. . . I am having to decide whether to push back my step 1 test date by a couple of weeks. If I choose to do this I will be forced to take 3 months off and thus will not start third year until August.. . . This might limit my away rotations amount to 1-2 rather than 3-4. At this point I am interested in surgery and possibly sub-speciality surgeries. . . thanks for any advice

I hear that away rotations are maybe more important in some of the surgical subspecialties than other specialties... but realistically, Step 1 trumps all. While I'm sure you still will need to do well on your away rotations to get the residency you want, a low Step score will outright close doors that can't be re-opened no matter how awesome you look on your aways.

And EM. SLORs from aways are very important. But the last part of your statement is key.

Step1, makes or breaks your competitiveness in any specialty (and even for some away locations). This has been painfully obvious to me as I did poorly on Step 1 and have been digging myself out of that hole ever since.

it's only February, you should have plenty of time to prepare for Step before the end of July.. when does your third year start?

nobody ever feels like they have enough time to adequately prepare for Step
