Hi. I plan on doing a rotation at MGH and am trying to sort out housing. Is it practical to stay at this Vanderbilt Hall (harvard medical student dorm)? From what I can ascertain from mapquest, it seems that Vanderbilt Hall is far away from MGH (although it's very close to BWH, etc.). What have people done in the past?

(Incidentally, is a visiting rotation at MGH or BWH "equivalent" to doing a rotation at the other, since they're part of the same network?)

Thanks.

I was doing research out there last summer, and I remember that BWH is not that far away from MGH, and I believe accessible by the subway if you change trains in there. BWH is by the green line, and you take that to Park (I think that's the name, but I'm not too sure about the name) and then you take the red line to MGH.

One thing to look into is to see if there's a shuttle from BWH to MGH. I remember that there's one that connects MIT to BWH, but I can't remember if there was one to MGH as well. Contact the people there to see if they can direct you better.

Hope that helps. :luck:

There is a free shuttle that goes between BWH and MGH at pretty regular intervals, and it makes pit stops to the Prudential Center, so you can get your mall shopping done on your way home from work. 🙂 The info on the shuttle is here. The place you pick up the shuttle on the BWH side is on the corner of Francis and Binney, which is about 2-3 blocks from Vanderbilt Hall. IMO if you're staying at Vanderbilt, it's much easier to take the shuttle than the T. It's also pretty much impossible to find an affordable place close to MGH to stay for a month, so if you have an offer at student housing, you should take them up on it.

Doing rotations at BWH and MGH are basically equivalent to each other. But obviously if you think you would prefer one over the other for residency you should try to rotate at that particular hospital, especially since the residency programs are completely separate. But a letter from someone at MGH will still carry a lot of weight at the BWH residency selection committee, and vice versa. Don't stress too much about where you should choose for your rotation, though, since you can't really count on getting your first choice rotation anyway.

Best housing option: Get on craigslist.com and check out the temporary housing section for boston. Then search that page for "red line" or "MGH" or "Beacon Hill" Anything on the red line will serve you well. Anything close to MGH will be a little more expensive but there are a lot of options close by.

Incidentally, I lived pretty far away and I was on the green line but Boston's mass transit is pretty good.

Doing a rotation at MGH is not the same and does not replace doing a rotation at BWH. If you are interested in both, do a rotation at both. The extra time in Boston will be nice and you'll get to see first hand the differences between the two programs.

I did an away at MGH last year. I stayed on beacon hill, in a studio that was $800. Commute from there (which is like RIGHT at the BW) to MGH was maybe 20-30min, tops. The green T connects to the Red T at Park Street. I often found the T to be slightly faster than the shuttle, though the shuttle is considerably more convenient at the end of the day when its after 6pm and you kinda dont wanna walk over to the T stop 😉

Hope that helps.

Dude, you're slipping. I think you meant to say that you lived in mission hill (the 'other' hill that's close to BWH), since beacon hill is right next to MGH, and will probably cost you double that for a studio....

That's okay, New Yorkers are supposed to hate Bostonians anyway. You must just be getting ready for your move. 😛

LOL you totally called me on it too. Yes, it was mission hill. Just getting my nyc mindset in full gear. But ill try to remember after my brainwashing that the pulm fellows in boston arent so bad

You wish you lived in Beacon Hill. (Where Senator Kerry and all the million dollar townhouses are) not in Mission Hill where the occasional drive by shooting is.

🙂

Yes, I have heard that Mission Hill has come a long way in the past few years.

I guess all the students from Harvard Med., Northeastern, and Wentworth have made the area safer than it used to be.
🙂

you have that backwards. MGH is in Beacon Hill, BWH is 20-30 minutes away by shuttle, in Fenway/Longwood/Brookline area.

way to make it through the whole thread before posting 😉
