Rotation Reads?

Hey all. Was just talking to a PD and he recommended reading Miller prior to starting an Anesthesia rotation. I just looked on Amazon.com and Miller is ~390$...Any other recs for pre-rotation reads so that I can brush up on some basic anesthesia without breaking the bank? Thanks!

I picked up baby Miller the other day. I don't think there's any way that I'm going to be able to get through it before my anesthesia rotation. But my goal is definitely to get through it in that month, and then select chapters again my second month.

Med students on anesthesia aren't really expected to know much. Before you start, I would say learn the common drugs/gases, their mechanisms, and their doses, all of which is featured in a couple charts in Baby Miller. You will be a big help if you know how to take a good anesthesia history and do an airway exam. Procedurally you are expected to know nothing going in, but it helps if you can put in an IV and know how to bag mask. When you start learning to intubate just be cautious and avoid teeth as people will just want to know that they can trust you at first. If you are a fun person to work with and come to work interested every day you will do fine, and if you keep reading baby Miller you will be in great shape. Good luck!

You might try Duke's Anesthesia Secrets if you don't want to read something with the depth of Baby Miller.

I was going to say the same thing. Anesthesia secrets is a great read, particularly for med students. Good review of physiology, which can help you with other rotations

Baby Miller is a solid introductory text. But for a student that is just doing a 1 month rotation in anesthesia, I feel like it's a bit dense given all the technical skills that have to be assimilated as well.

NMS Anesthesia is a good Med Student level book. It's cheap it covers all the things I'd expect a med student to know at the end of a 4 week rotation (pre-anesthesia eval, basic monitoring, anesthetic types, common drug pharm, important phys, etc) without bogging you down in detail that makes the important points easy to miss. Plus, it's pocket-size.

Anesthesia Secrets (as mentioned above) is a bit more resident level, but still a good book. You'll get a lot of info that's geared towards resident in training exams, but the core info is still there. Personally, I'd do this one once you're on your feet.

As for full Textbooks... I know Baby Miller is a staple, but I've found Morgan and Mikhail (Clinical Anesthesia) to be a bit more approachable. There's more information here than I expect a student to know and it'd be a challenge to get through in a 4 week rotation but I feel that it's an easier read than some of the other resident level texts out there.

Best book to have gone through before your first anesthesia rotation. It's easy to read this book in an afternoon or over a weekend. After you've read this book and are doing your rotation, pick up Baby Miller and/or Lange and go through the relevant chapters.
