Hi fellow pod med students,
When you choose your 4th year rotations, are they all 1 month rotations or do they vary? I'll like some insight. Thanks!
Clerkships are 1 month. At DMU, you'll have a core which is 4 months.
This may vary at different schools

NYCPM recently added a 4th externship which unfortunately is only 2 weeks. Some can last 5 weeks depending on the month and some may last 3 weeks if you arrange to visit other programs in the same area.
Most are 4 weeks.

At Scholl we have 7 (4 week) externships around the country starting January of your 3rd year.

Did they just increase the number of rotations? I thought the SCPM had 6 external rotations, 3 in the 3rd year and 3 in the fourth.
As far as I know, Scholl's always had 7 externships. You have 2 or 3 your 3rd year and 4 or 5 your 4th, depending on when you take SCPM's Radiology clerkship at school, 3rd or 4th year. I don't take Radiology until Sept. (my 4th year), so now I have 3 externships this spring and 4 during my 4th year. But, most students use their last externship as a vacation month just before graduation. So, most do 6 actual externships, unless they fail one or need to make up.

Okay that makes sense. Every Scholl student I talked to said that they've done/do 6 rotations.
Barry's externships and "home months" are all one month long to my knowledge...
During May-Dec of 4th year, students get 6 externships and 2 "home months" at Miami clinics. A lot of people do 5 externships and then take the other month off for CRIPS, vacation, or to visit/re-visit programs they are interested in.

So are your "home" months at residency programs?
That is a good question. I really don't have a whole lot of interest in staying in South Florida for residency at this point, so I never thought very much about it...So are your "home" months at residency programs?
I'd say that some of the possible 4th year "home month" Miami hospitals certainly have DPM residencies (Mercy, Mt Sinai, Palmetto, Jackson, DVA, Parkway, etc). I'm not sure if the Barry clinics are "home month" possibilities, but if they are, students would still work with Barry faculty who are residency directors or attendings on a fair number of the clinic days there too.
Maybe at commencement, I'll try to ask one of the 07 graduates to find out more about the two 4th year "home months." I suppose that, for a Barry student going after a south Florida residency (many do), those months could be, in effect, two more clerkships before CRIPS.

I just wondered b/c it seems like they limited the programs you can visit, especially if you want a vacation month.
Do you guys have lecture/classes in your 4th year?
Barry's 4th year works like this:...Do you guys have lecture/classes in your 4th year?
Summer and Fall semesters (May-Dec):
5 externships anywhere you get accepted
1 month off (or a 6th externship)
2 "home months" in Miami hospitals
(no classes... you do the 8 months above in any order you want)
Spring semester (Jan-graduation):
MWF: Barry clinics
Tu/Th: a few 1-credit classes (practice management, community med, sport med, research, seminar, etc)
