Hello, I am new to the forums this is my first post, so go easy on me if I do something wrong. Anyways I have just recently decided to go into the medical field. With the idea of med school, I decided to check out my GPA recently. Well I'm running around a 3.5 right now, this is after about 61 hours of college credit. This is primarily due to the fact that I took classes when I wasn't very driven to get good grades (in high-school) and so I earned a lot of Bs. On the bright side I have made an A in every science course I've taken. I'm perfectly capable of having a much higher GPA and I am working on keeping a 4.0 from here on out. My question is, how much is this going to affect my future chances to getting into medical schools? Will they be understanding of the fact that I was a slacker at the beginning of my college studies?

A 3.5 can get you into any school. It all depends on your MCAT score and your extracurriculars.

Upward trends are always nice.

a 3.5 isnt even a rough gpa. its below avg by 0.1. what are u talking about

Quit fussing; you're fine. There are a decent number of med schools for which a 3.5 is competitive.

Source? Even a 3.6 is way below the 10th percentile for many/most of the top 20's. I don't think a 39+ MCAT can make up for that??

I'm assuming the students who get into the Top 20 with relatively below average GPAs don't get in purely on a compensating MCAT, but with stellar EC's as well. Unless your extracurriculars and MCAT are stellar, a 3.5 GPA significantly reduces your chances at a school of Stanfords caliber for example. So yeah, I don't think a 3.5 can get you "anywhere". But it won't make things impossible to get in anywhere assuming the rest of the app is fantastic.
