Roughly how many words in a personal statement?

I know that there are a certain # of characters allowed for the AMCAS personal statement, but someone said that Word's character number differs from the AMCAS character number. Could you guys please let me know roughly the number of words that you put in your personal statement?

My personal statement was about 800 words. However, I only used about 90 percent of the allowed space.
