I've decided to apply to an OMFS program after graduating (current dental student), but my rank is not good enough to get an acceptance right out. Because of this, I'm planning on doing an internship - any input on which would be the best route to do so?

I'm currently thinking of doing the following: increasing my rank as best as I can over this next year or so, doing an AEGD/GPR while I study for the NBME, then doing an internship. I figure this gives me the best chance to getting in by improving my rank, do well on the NBME (while also staying in an academic setting - I've heard that program directors don't like private practice - not sure if this matters when applying for an internship?), and then making a good impression during my internship. Thoughts would be appreciated!

what year are you in now? and what is your current rank? those information will be helpful to give you a more personalized, detailed advice on your application.

DS3. Currently middle of the pack - started off in the 60s and aiming to graduate in the mid 30s. No clue if an upward trend is beneficial like it was in undergrad!

1. Keep working hard to raise your rank
2. Take NBME and see how you do
3. Do as many externships as you can while in dental school
4. Apply as many programs as possible and see if you get some interview invites (this will depend on your NBME score since your class rank is not favorable at this point)
5. Go on interviews if you get them and even if you don't match the first time, it will be a good practice for you and it will make your internship application stronger at programs you interviewed
6. Do an internship if you didn't match
7. If you were not fortunate enough to get matched as a categorical or even an internship spot anywhere, then do a GPR/AEGD and follow the plan you described. This way you may be able to save a year or two (those years are expensive if you think about it)

Gotcha, appreciate the help! Sent you a pm by the way, I'd appreciate it if you can check it out when you have a chance.

I know a few people who did not match after an internship. Those who went on to complete another internship all matched the second time. Those who did other things did not end up matching. As you know, OMFS directors tend to appreciate dedication.
